What Is 2008's Word of the Year?

What Is 2008's Word of the Year?

We've been breaking down the biggest stories of 2008, and now it's time to reduce the year into one little word. The three major American-English dictionaries have chosen their words of the year — bailout, hypermiling, and overshare — and now it's our turn. I've added three runners-up to make it interesting — maverick, meh, and rogue. What do you think?

Don't like 'em? Perhaps you'd prefer the German youth Word of the Yeargammelfleischparty? A derogatory term for a gathering of people over 30. Literally meaning "spoiled-meat party."

I LOVE screen tan.

Out of this list, Bailout. I think it was the word that defined our economical state, as well as a pivotal moment leading up to the 2008 election. Maverick merely represents a losing campaign.

Umm. "Meh" was big in the southwest in like, 2005, at the latest. Really, newsbloggers are just now getting a hold of it?

Hmm, my comment was flagged and I don't have the slightest idea why... Did I curse and not even realize (or remember) it? :?

Ha, who would have thought that today's youth is that creative? :) I think I actually prefer the word that came in second: "Bildschirmbraeune" or "screen tan" — referring to the complexion of someone who spends too much time at a computer *lol* Btw, the "grown-up" German Word of the Year is "Finanzkrise" (financial crisis). How boring is that? As to the poll, I chose "maverick".

I got so sick of hearing the word "maverick". I am so glad that it's over as best it can be now.

I'd like to choose "maverick" but I chose bailout!

I think it is so funny that Obama took a word that is used all the time on a daily basis, and made it his. He practically owns that word now, because whenever anyone says it, most think of him. I think it says a lot that he predicted the mood of this election very early on, and claimed it. And in my office, the word of the year is "ho bag". As in, "What's goin' on, ho bag?"

Joe Sixpack, but barring that, maverick sums up 2008.
