Why Women Love Vamps: It's Really a Desire For Gay Men?

Why Women Love Vamps: It's Really a Desire For Gay Men?

Esquire's Stephen Marche thinks he's figured out the obvious explanation for the vampire craze sweeping the world. He writes:

Vampires have overwhelmed pop culture because young straight women want to have sex with gay men. Not all young straight women, of course, but many, if not most, of them.

So there you have it. Still confused? Using Twilight as an example, Marche draws a parallel between Edward and a gay man who is the object of a straight woman's lust. He says that just like an unresponsive gay man, Edward is a "sweet, screwed-up high school kid, and at the beginning of his relationship with Bella, she is attracted to him because he is strange, beautiful, and seemingly repulsed by her."

Marche believes that wanting Edward to be your boyfriend is the same as wishing you could turn that gorgeous gay man into your lover. Are you buying this theory? If not, why do you think some women love the vamps?

Obviously the guy advocating that theory is a gay himself. Here's my theory: Lot's of gays (and straights, to be fair) love the idea to be desired by everyone. So they promoting the idea that everyone is falling for one. As for vampires because of their immortality, their promises for eternal love sound sincere. Add the intensity and the wisdom of somebody who lived enough to witness the rise and the fall of ancient empires... Love forever, wisdom and intensity, well, that does it for me.

Annoyedsquared, I agree! This seems to be a problem throughout the Sugar Network, and I can't figure out why.

i agree w/ anon #13's comment...she/he summed it up perfectly for me. anne rice's books are still my fav vamp-stories and the characters swing both ways. its just the ultimate romance/sex appeal/bad boy that sucks (pun intended!) women in to the vampire fantasy.

I like men to appear, and act, manly. Straight guys that groom every part of their body, enjoy staring at themselves in the mirror, take forever to get ready, or wear sparkly clothes (Affliction), completely gross me out. Gay men can do whatever they want, as they are not trying to attract the ladies.

Well, I don't personally find vampires very attractive, but I still don't think those who do secretly like being rejected by gay men! What a bunch of crap! I think the appeal is that they seem mysterious, dark and brooding, much like a poet or rockstar.

I believe it because Marche is an expert on women, women's love of vampires, and gay men. And psychology. :P

lol how is one "almost gay"? I can see where they are coming from in this theory and I can see it applying to some women. Not all though. I've been into vampires for a long time and it's never been the gay factor or because I long to have sex with a gay man. But I do agree that it's more about the wanting what you can't have theory. Plus the dark side, bad boy, clean, romantic etc.

@psychotic_virus, Interview with a vampire was based on a pretty freaking gay book :P

i think thats really silly theory. i think young girls fall for vamps just because it is romantic. its just a story of true love, living forever looking for that one true love and some girls just put themselves in that position. so i dont think the theory of gay men adds up. i mean vamps are old and romantic even tho they suck the blood and kill; watever...i mean cmon doesnt anybody remember interview with the vampire? i am not one of those girls that are obsessed with vamps but i could see why some girls could be.

He can say whatever he wants to about Twilight, but blanketing that universe over all other vampire lore is ridiculous.

I think the theory is valid on the "want what you can't have" factor.

I believe it. A lot of the people I know who like Twilight also tend to fall for guys that are gay/almost gay. Then again, I hate Twilight with a passion (real vampires are awesome though, emphasis on REAL), and I've fallen for my fair share of gay/metrosexual guys. Gay guys are hot.

Well I don't know a thing about Twilight, but the gayliciousness is certainly one of the reasons why I enjoy Anne Rice's vampire chronicles so much! Yum yum.
