Women Make Up 25 Percent of Iraqi Parliament

Picture It: A Meeting of Equals

An Iraqi politician spoke with female lawmakers today, as the country's parliament tried unsuccessfully to form a majority government. Women make up 25 percent of Iraq's parliament. By comparison, only about 15 percent of members in the US House and Senate are women.

Spacekat, the thing most people don't understand about the middle east is that they are not really any kind of cohesive unit. Most of those countries HATE each other, each country wants to see the other fail, there is no unity at all. So it is irrelevant what the other ME countries think. There were THOUSANDS of names on the ballot - it is not like they chose between 2 parties who MUST conform to the same political lines that have dominated for hundreds of years. I'd say in many ways their elections are more legit than ours.

Puppet government or not, I'm glad to see the Iraqi people have elected so many women to office.

I disagree. The Iraqi people ELECTED their government and as someone who personally knows people IN Iraq who voted and are politically active, it seems that their government is their own. The reasons the government sometimes cooperates or is aligned with the US gov is because our interests and theirs are aligned at the moment. They don't have to be Anti-American (like the most of the ME govts claims to be) in order to qualify as a non-puppet govt.
