Worth the Money? Obama Outspends McCain in July by 5-3 Ratio After tightening his expenditures in June, Obama spent far more freely in July, cutting into his cash reserves while mounting an advertising campaign against McCain. Obama raised more than $50 million in July, a slight dip from the previous month, according to his monthly financial report, filed around midnight Wednesday with the FEC. He spent about $55 million, with three-fifths of that devoted to media costs. Despite spending less, McCain has taken a five point lead in a recent Zogby poll.

The results are almost always within the margin of error for these polls. As for spending money, I'm sure both candidates have an extremely detailed strategy as to which expenses would be best for them. I doubt the way they spend money is going to make or break this election. And I agree with UnDave (surprise, surprise) about the challenges McCain has had to overcome to get a slight lead/to be even with Obama. In my opinion, he was definitely the underdog coming into this whole thing. It is pretty accepted in D.C. that the Republicans didn't run their best candidates this time around because they saw it as a throwaway election. (At least with people who I know, which includes a pretty good mix of Dems and Repubs.)

There's one company that calls us EVERY SINGLE MORNING AT 8:30 A.M. Looking for someone of whom we've never heard. After a while, I got sick of picking up the phone and then hanging it up, so I started screaming at them. They never called after that.

I never pay a lot of attention to polls at this stage of the game. They fluctuate too much. Plus, if other people treat the political pollers who call them at home the way I do, then that's not a particularly good sample anyway.

He's not gaining any ground in those states, but he isn't losing ground either. The spending is keeping the status quo. "There are two ways to look at this," Tracey says. On the one hand, Obama is pouring significant resources into seven states where McCain is spending nothing at all, and hasn't necessarily gained enough in those states to show for it." Obama is spending large amounts on air time where McCain is spending nothing, and not getting anything. So McCain is spending wisely by putting his money only where he needs to.

Well, the article says he's not gaining any ground where he's spending the money. How is that spending wisely?

So McCain spent his money more wisely?

He's also the guy who has to overcome the negative perception of the Bush administration, isn't the one who is going to make "history", and isn't the media's darling. He also began this contest 10 points behind. If you do the math, that puts him 15 points ahead and climbing.

Why can't McCain pull ahead decisively - he's the war hero, known entity, born again maverick tough guy.

McCain got outspent and is still gaining on Obama? Less is more? Why can't Obama seal the deal?

Good point. I think I heard some of McCain's ads ran on tv once or not at all. They just put them on youtube and let the media take over.

When you make ads that are completely absurd, the news media runs them for free for you! Who knew that the limbo "how low can you go" strategy would actually be a money saver? ;)

I could have sworn I just saw an article about McCain outspending Obama and the concern he wouldn't be able to keep up this kind of spending until November since he has less money.
