Is It Wrong For GOP to Use Barack Obama's Middle Name?

Is It Wrong For GOP to Use Barack Obama's Middle Name?

Supporters of the McCain-Palin ticket have been energizing the base by referring to the opponent as "Barack Hussein Obama." At a campaign rally yesterday, the GOP official who introduced McCain and Palin twice used the Democrat's full name, Barack Hussein Obama. After the event, the McCain campaign said it didn't condone such rhetoric. This was the second time this week "Hussein" has been dropped at a McCain event.

The controversy around Barack's middle name raises a bunch of questions. Since it is Obama's given middle name, perhaps there's nothing wrong with using it. Then again, the spirited response from the McCain crowds reminds us that "Hussein" is more than just a middle name, it is a signal that Barack is somehow "different" — and different can scare voters. Hoping to quell false perceptions, Obama has released a biographical ad, highlighting his all-American story.

I think Thelma (McCain) and Louise (Palin) oh I’m sorry, Sydney and Louise (because that’s much less feminine) should lay off the middle name, it’s an immature ploy to scare people. Judging someone’s character by their name is a childish kindergarten tactic. Hey McCain, Sydney is a girls name you big weenie, nah, nah, nah.

Well, it is Obama's middle name. No need hiding it, however, it is disgusting on McCain and Palin's part to use it. Their intent is quite apparent--to secure the votes of those who aren't rational enough to understand that Obama's middle name is just a middle name. It's really quite boggling how dumb-downed American political campaigns are. There really is no substance from either side.

Hey perhaps DNC should start using John's middle name. "Hello Sidney. Do you like Scary Movies?" They should remind the American public that Sidney (Sydney) is a city if Australia, that had a far superior Olymics than the US presented! Also that back in the 80's there was a really crappy TV show starring one Tony Randall called "Love, Sidney"...that show was stomach churning, bad tv.

It's beyond goofy when Republicans try to use his middle name against him, like he had a say in what his name would be. They are trying to being up memories of Saddam and connect Barak to Islam and stress that he's "different" and that different is wrong and not American. Dang I hope if that I run for office people don't try to my middle name against me. "Her middle name is LYNN! LYNN! Can you believe that? One of the most common middle name for girls born during the 70's. OMG!" Color me mortified. Top that off with my real initials are MLB and me and Major League Baseball could be in a copyright infringement battle.

My sister went from being Jenny to Jennifer when she matured. I find it completely absurd when people try to suggest that changing his name from Barry to Barack was some sort of radical idea.

"It's Barack's middle name. What does he have to hide?" It isn't that he has anything to HIDE, and I think it says more about the people that use his middle name, obviously in a manipulative way. They are clearly trying to infer something when they use it, and that to me says a lot. It is so amazing, because having insight into how the world works is a very good skill to have, and the anti-intellectual campaign is once again trying to make an asset appear to be a bad thing. It is GOOD that Obama understands world culture.

I don't like Barry, it reminds me of a pimp.

Boy people sure do get off topic easy. How the hell did we get to Gossip Girl? Anyways using his whole name with disdain is a scare tactic, like I said before desperate times calls for desperate measures.

I think he should go back to Barry.

I think if Obama changed his name people would interpret that as him being ashamed of it, or wanting to cover it up. Which would then feed into the "Hussein=a terrorist" stereotype.

carrie, I didn't read the thread before I commented. I guess I'm totally naive. :rotfl:

Wow! This poll really surprised me. I don't see anything wrong with his name...or saying his name. He could have changed it if he hated it. Technically, he still could. Anyone who votes for someone based on their name is completely ignorant, imo.

The reason that it is wrong for the McCain camp to use his middle name is that they are using it two days after they started with the Barack associates with gasp "known terrorist." They are trying to tear him down by insinuating that he is a terrorist and if you for a second think they is not their strategy you are incredibly naive!

CG I looooooooooooved that series. Loved. It. Could not believe they ended it, even though I understand it was a financial thing (apparently super expensive to make the episodes).

I'm not a fan of Kat Heigl. I only liked the work she did with Jeffery Dean Morgan *swoon*, it was so good to see him the other day. They need to get rid of Izzy and Lexie. Meredith needs to get over herself. I would watch again if they made Christina as cutthroat as she used to be. I just don't see how these characters have evolved. Dr. Burke was great, I really miss him.

I liked Dr. Burke too. Great character. The people on the show are so conflicted, it gets annoying. But I guess that is the point of a drama. Izzy needs to go. I wish she would get that brain tumor that I heard about in the off season. It could still happen, never too late to write in a brain tumor.
