You Can Tell a lot About Someone by How They Sleep

Everyone has a sleeping position they prefer. I could never fall asleep on my back and I just found out that the way you sleep may give insight into your personality (or someone else's if you sneak a peek at them snoozing).

Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the UK Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service analyzed 6 common sleeping positions among 1,000 people, and found that each is linked to personality traits.

Fetus: This is the most common sleeping position - 41% of people sleep like this. These people are tough on the outside but sensitive at heart. They may be shy when they first meet somebody, but soon relax and open up. More than twice as many women as men tend to sleep like this.

Log: 15% of people sleep lying on their side with both arms down by their body. These sleepers are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd. They may be trusting of strangers and gullible.

Want to see the others? Then

Yearner: 13% of people sleep on their side with both arms out in front. They are described as having an open nature, but can be suspicious and cynical. They can be indecisive, but once they have made a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it.

Soldier: If you sleep on your back, you are among the 8%. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don't like drama, and set high standards for themselves and others.

Freefaller: 7% of people sleep on their belly with their hands around a pillow, and their head turned to one side. Often friendly, warm and self-confident people, they can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath. They don't take criticism very well, and don't like extreme situations.

Starfish: Sleeping on your back with both arms around a pillow is the least popular - only 5% of people choose this position. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don't like to be the center of attention.

Well there you have it. This info is kind of like reading your horoscope - interesting to hear, possibly true, but should be taken with a grain of salt. What do you think about all this?

That's interesting. I'm a fetus. I don't think I have a tough exterior though, or at least I hope I don't come off that way to people.

heh...i move all around in my sleep, but i'd say most commoly i revert to freefaller...only to wake up as soldier or starfish. who knows. i just know i severely annoy my bedmates, should there be any, by moving around so much! lol

Ashlyn, I totally agree. It almost becomes like a self-fulfilling prophecy - I sleep this way and therefore I am like this. I also don't believe in these sorts of tests. I think that you sleep a certain way that's comfortable to your body. For example, I usually sleep on my side on my own very soft mattress. But when I am at my parents' they have a really firm mattress, and since I'm built really curvily, the middle of me isn't supported because my shoulder and hip don't sink into the mattress. Therefore, at their house, I sleep on my back. I mean, seriously, I really don't believe there's anything more too it that how your body is built and what position allows it to relax most easily given where you're sleeping.

the descriptions of personality to match the sleeping position are way too generalized. obviously you think "your" description "matches you well. i don't think it's all that simple. and like someone else said, many of us fall asleep in one position but end up waking up in another etc...

This is a bunch of BS. It's the Barnum effect. Those descriptions are so vague they could apply to anyone.

I usually start off in a fetus and end up in a yearner....that sounds weird.

I'm obsessed with this! Freefaller all the way...I was scared/surprised at how accurate it was. My sister and I have the same personality traits and when I called to ask her about this I found out she sleeps the same random way as I do, makes sense!

I'm a Soldier sleeper mainly, but when I'm out with the fellas and have too much to drink, Mr. Freefaller lands on the pillow and remains that way until the sun rises. I used to do the fetus as a kid. Oh and before I was born...

I always sleep in the fetus position; it's weird because that description is just like me! I always put on a tough front however I do take alot of things to heart. And I am really shy until I find a common subject w/ somebody. It's cool how spot-on that was about me.

i sleep in fetus and yearner. the descriptions seem a little off about me. yeah, I've been told i sleep with my eyes slightly open too, bookgirl. maybe its more common than we think.

i don't remember ever sleeping in any position but the fetus. i actually didn't even believe other people slept differently until i saw my boyfriend sleep: he's always always always a "soldier". it's weird though, cos even when we go to sleep cuddling we always wake up in our respective sleeping positions. hmm. funny.
