This High School's Sexist Prom Dress Code Has Everyone Enraged

Imagine you're back in high school and prom is one week away. Your dress alterations are done, your pre- and postprom festivities are scheduled, and everything is perfectly planned out. Now, imagine if your school administrators decided to hang up fliers one week before the big night explicitly telling girls what types of dresses weren't going to be allowed at prom. That's what a high school in Florida is dealing with right now, and the timing of the new dress code isn't even close to being the worst part of the fliers.

Earlier this week, the students at Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville were greeted with some alarming signs complete with last-minute prom dress code rules. Each of the four fliers had "Going to Stanton Prom?" written on the top with a different dress printed out, seen above. The three revealing dresses had "NO YOU'RE NOT" written underneath the photos, blatantly stating that cutouts, exposed cleavage, high slits, and completely-open-back dresses were "NOT" permitted. But one of the most jaw-dropping parts about these fliers is actually the one style that is allowed — a sleeveless, skintight mermaid gown — writing, "YES YOU ARE. GOOD GIRL."

The school's fliers have now gone viral, and everyone is trying to understand how a prom dress can make someone a "good girl" or not. There's no denying that the three "NO" dresses are pretty revealing, but the school is implying that those who have ensembles resembling the three banned dresses are bad people. It's pretty infuriating and also brings up the question of if there were similar fliers for the male students.

As expected, the Stanton students were enraged upon seeing the fliers, with many taking to Twitter to express how appalled they were with their school and starting the hashtag #SCPGoodGirl. The fliers were reportedly removed immediately after all the backlash. The Duval County School District took to Twitter to explain the fliers, writing, "The display of prom dress photos at Stanton College Prep is not appropriate or an approved policy. Images were removed on Mon." According to Action News Jax, the principal apologized: "Please do accept my apology for this poor delivery of information. Our intent is to make sure prom is enjoyable and memorable."
