4 Popular Ways to Wind Down at the End of the Day

Overstressed? Up at night with worries or insomnia? You may need to focus in on unwinding at the end of a long day. It's normal for moms to feel worn down by day's end. After all, as Circle of Moms member Maggi S. shares, "Being a mom is a full-time job in itself and we do need breaks ... It is so important that you take time out of each day for yourself to process your day. Even if you take just 15 minutes when you get home from work and go into your room alone. Your children will learn your routine."

Amy L. is one of many Circle of Moms members who has found a way to put this into action. In the evenings she tells her kids that "it is quiet time or movie time," and while they watch a movie or do an activity, she chills out by herself. Here are some other mom-prescribed ways to make the evening a bridge to more restful sleep:

1. Indulge in Mindless Entertainment

"When my toddler goes to bed, I collapse on the couch and watch mindless TV, and or read a mindless novel," says Kim B. Tabatha N. employs a similar chill-out strategy. "Most of the time, I find time for myself after everyone has gone to bed," she says. "I try to spend about 30 minutes for me to just watch TV or chill out." And Seoul S. says that "a juicy novel" is what does the trick for her.

2. Skip Chores and Play Instead

Many moms say that letting chores slide at night so that you can focus instead on enjoying your children is a great antidote to the day's tensions. Working mom and student Vanessa C. shares that she likes to spend her evenings playing with her 8-month-old: "We have play time for us both to unwind from the day and enjoy each other...when needed we give him a bath and that is part of our play time. But other than that, we just play or go outside and just take it easy...I just feel so much better I gave my baby all the time I could after work (plus, it's good to give yourself time to de-stress and just enjoy your beautiful family.)"

3. Take a Bath

If a long soak chilled you out before you were a mom, it's a great, at-home relaxation strategy to revisit. And if you've never been a soaker, a hot shower can work the same magic. Working mom Jill E. is a fan, setting aside time for her daily soak "after the kids go to sleep."

4. Enjoy a Hobby

Taking time to journal or work on a favorite hobby, are great ways to slip out of "mom" mode, as tapping into your creativity will help you relax, says Jessica O. "I put a show or movie they like on in their rooms and sit at the computer and write," she says. "When I don't have the computer I write in a journal. It gives me release to write out whatever I am feeling, and then it's off my shoulders." She also advises: "Just find something that you really enjoy, like photography, scrapbooking, whatever, and schedule time for it."
