Amazon Prime Just Announced a Move That Will Change Many Families' Lives For the Better

Amazon just announced a move that stands to change the everyday lives of people receiving Medicaid and other forms of government assistance: a discounted membership with all of the same perks. For less than half the price of a normal Prime membership — just under $6 per month versus $13 — Medicaid recipients and valid EBT cardholders will be able to enjoy all of the same features that make Amazon Prime such a game changer for online shoppers. That means free two-day shipping, significant discounts on necessities like diapers, and fun stuff like unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows with Prime Video.

Amazon Prime Vice President Cem Sibay described some of the reasons [1] discounted access to Prime can be helpful for those in need of financial assistance: "We hope to make Prime even more accessible. With more than 100 million products to choose from, low prices, time savings, and fast and convenient delivery options, the combination of shipping, shopping and entertainment provide tremendous value to customers."

According to TechCrunch [2], kids under age 19 make up almost half of the population receiving Medicaid assistance, while others who might struggle in a traditional shopping environment — such as seniors and disabled individuals — make up much of the remaining percentage.

In an announcement about the new membership discount, Amazon featured stories from families whose lives have been improved by their Prime membership. From single parents with special-needs kids to disabled veterans, the Amazon Prime discount has liberated those whose circumstances make in-store shopping difficult.
