Lil Community: Baby Shower Gift Advice

A friend's pregnancy can lead childless friends to wander aimlessly through baby stores looking for the perfect baby shower gift. While there are perfectly practical gifts to be given, there are also those that will wow the crowd and others that are truly unique. This question was submitted by candy2007 in the Ask Anything box.

I'm going to a baby shower next month for a close friend and I was hoping for suggestions for some great gifts besides clothes.

Motherhood is a mind boggler! Before driving yourself crazy looking for answers, head over to the LilSugar Community and type your inquiry away in our Ask the Community Anything box.

Since all my friends are childless they had no idea what was practical and all I got were cute little outfits that were completely impractical. I mean a Dior shirt for a newborn? It's a keepsake, though ;) If she has a registry use it. If not, I say it's completely okay to ask her if she has any wishes. A swing maybe or a high chair. A nice sling or a starter set of bottles (even breastfeeding mamas need those!).

Mom to be will likely get a lot of gifts for the baby -- what about a spa gift cert for a massage or a mani/ pedi?

I hate to push my own blog, but I happened to have just written an article on shower gifts. Hope you find it useful.

i agree with all of the above. although if you want to do something that is a less expensive physical gift (and the registry is bought out/non-existent), i think books would be a safe bet. correct me if i'm wrong parents!

2nd the gift registry. I ended up with a ridiculous amount of clothes with my 1st...everyone wants to buy a cute outfit but you can't possibly use all of it. If there is no registry, or nothing left, diapers/wipes are always useful!!! If you must buy clothes buy useful ones...onesies, undershirts, footed sleepers. And I found most people won't buy you 0-3 mths even though you do need that size (even if for only a month).

I'm sure there will be other ideas for unique and meaningful gifts, so I'll put my 2 cents in as someone who is currently expecting - if she has a registry, get her something from it! I put both practical and more nice-to-have stuff on there, at a variety of price ranges, and it sure would be nice if people actually bought stuff off of it.
