Sleep. It's a much-talked-about topic in parenting, especially when you have a baby or a toddler. As adults, we sleep with blankets. But the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping babies' cribs free of blankets and plushies — so instead, many parents turn to swaddles and sleep sacks.

Swaddles work until a baby can roll over, at which point using them can become dangerous, says Betty Choi, MD, a pediatrician and the author of "Human Body Learning Lab": "With arms trapped in the swaddle, a baby might not be able to reposition themselves, resulting in a suffocation risk."

That's when many parents transition to a sleep sack. "Sleep sacks are basically what they sound like — wearable blankets that look like mini sleeping bags for babies and toddlers," Dr. Choi says. We rounded up 10 of the best sleep sacks on Amazon, but some words of warning: avoid weighted sleep sacks, which pose a suffocation risk. And always keep an eye on Consumer Product Safety Commission product recalls, just in case, Dr. Choi says.

Burt's Bees Sleep Sack

Burt's Bees Baby Unisex-Baby Beekeeper Wearable Blanket ($18)

Made with 100 percent organic cotton, this wearable blanket is a No. 1 bestseller on Amazon for "baby wearable blankets" and boasts nearly 29K reviews with 4.7 stars.

"I used transition sleeping bags before, and they were small and overpriced, especially for the quality," one reviewer said. "That's why I changed brand and bought this. This is perfect for our baby: breathable, thin, and soft fabric."

Worth noting, however, is that some reviewers took points off for a finicky zipper.

Lightweight Sleep Sack For Summer

Lightweight Sleep Sack For Summer

Yoofoss Baby Sleep Sack ($27 for three)

Warmer weather doesn't need to mess with your baby's sleep routine. Just swap in a lighter-weight sleep sack. This Yoofoss one, which fits infants and toddlers from 0 to 24 months, is made entirely of cotton. It's also roomy, preventing it from sticking to the little one and adding to its breathability. Despite the looser fit, a two-way zipper keeps it secure.

"[My baby has] outgrown the fleece [sleep sacks] she first had, so I purchased these lighter cotton sleep sacks for the Midwest summer," a reviewer gushed. "They are lightweight and perfect! I also like that they don't have sleeves because they go on so quickly — very pretty colors as well."

Zippered Sleep Sack For Easy Diaper Changes

Zippered Sleep Sack For Easy Diaper Changes

Tillyou Sleep Sack ($23 for two)

Late-night diaper changes can be a doozie for so many reasons, but fidgeting with a zipper need not be one of them. A sleep sack with a two-way zipper streamlines the process by eliminating the need to unzip the entire sleep sack to swap in a fresh diaper.

Tillyou's sleep sack, which comes in packs of two, also has a protective cover for the zipper to help ward off chewing and comes in four sizes that fit littles from 0 to 24 months.

"I would say these sleep sacks are a really great deal for the price," one person said. "You get two. They have dual zippers, are soft, and are so cute." But, the reviewer warns, their sacks developed some "piled-up threads," likely from several trips through the washing machine.

Long-Sleeved Sleep Sack

Long-Sleeved Sleep Sack

Hudson Baby Unisex Baby Cotton Long-Sleeve Wearable Sleeping Bag ($20)

Long-sleeved sleep sacks are great for chillier weather, air-conditioned homes, and extra coziness for a baby. Hudson's long-sleeved sleep sack is made of so-soft cotton and is nice and roomy, giving your baby room to grow and move.

"They are a good quality, soft cotton, and the prints are true to the pictures," said one reviewer on Amazon, where the sleep sacks have earned a 4.6-star rating. "I preferred these over the sleeveless type because, with summer coming up and the A/C on, I didn't want her to get cold during her sleep. I can keep her in a onesie and use these long-sleeved wearable sacks."

The sleep sacks come in numerous prints, including whimsical "enchanted forests," adorable foxes, floral, and football. Sizing ranges from 0 to 24 months.

Halo Sleep Sack

Halo Sleep Sack

Halo 100% Cotton Sleepsack Swaddle and 3-Way Adjustable Wearable Blanket ($50)

This buzzy brand, which is used in many hospitals, offers a gift set that includes a swaddle and a sleep sack. Having both on hand makes it easy for new parents to transition their baby from one to the next once the little one starts rolling.

"[This gift set] literally makes life so much easier both for my husband and I and our baby," one parent raved. "[I] originally bought the . . . bundle just to see what's up, but had to come back and buy another."

Super-Soft Merlin Sleep Sack

Super-Soft Merlin Sleep Sack

Baby Merlin's Magic Dream Sleep Sack ($30)

Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit is a cult favorite among parents of newborns, and the next step for slightly older, rolling babies is this dream sleep sack. It has two layers, and the outer cotton or microfleece layer is so soft, you won't want to put the baby down, while the inner jersey cotton layer is breathable for your little one's comfort. Amazon reviewers have given the "softness" feature a perfect five-star rating.

"Magic," one well-rested parent said. "We had the Merlin [sleepsuit], and my son was sleeping through the night with it. When he started to roll, we transitioned him out to a normal sleep sack, and he was waking up [two to three times per night]. We just got this two days ago, and [he] has only woken up once each night! I wish I could give this product 10 stars."

Transition Sleep Sack

Transition Sleep Sack

Love to Dream Swaddle UP Transition Bag ($40)

Some babies have a hard time transitioning from the wrapped-up comfort of a swaddle to an arms-free sleep sack, which is where this transition bag comes in. The "wings" on either side come off to let baby's arms free. When you're transitioning to a sleep sack, the brand recommends starting with just one arm free to get your baby used to the sensation. After a couple nights, let loose the other one, too.

It won't work for all babies, but the ones who love it really love it. "The materials are soft and warm, and a really useful guide of what to wear is on the back of the packaging," one reviewer said. "There is a transition period for your little one as you can zip off each handcuff to get them ready for a sleeping bag. Since moving our little one into these, he's slept far longer than before and doesn't startle himself awake, and we've even managed to get some better sleep ourselves as parents."

Starfish Transition Swaddle

Starfish Transition Swaddle

SleepingBaby Zipadee-Zip Transition Swaddle ($40)

The Zipadee-Zip transition swaddle is safe for rollers and provides a unique starfish design. "Our child transitioned to these effortlessly and actually began sleeping through the night within a week or so," one reviewer said. "It's been a week since then, and he hasn't woken up crying in the night, not even once. It's made me wonder if this would have helped our first child sleep through the night, so my only regret is not buying these years ago."

Worth noting: some reviewers flagged that the zipper can get bunched up by a child's mouth and that the material pills easily.

Disney Sleep Sack

Disney Sleep Sack

Disney Wearable Blanket ($16)

Been planning your first trip to Disney since your little one was nothing but a wish your heart was making? Consider these swaddles, which come in Dumbo, Mickey, and Minnie prints, as the baby version of Cinderella's glass slipper.

And it's more than just a fun fandom moment: the sleep sack has racked up 4.8 stars out of five based on more than 1.5K reviewers. The zip-front swaddle is made of cotton, fits infants 6 to 12 months, and is machine washable. "This item is top quality — soft and so warm," one reviewer said.

Halo Sleep Sack For Toddlers

Halo Sleep Sack For Toddlers

Halo Sleepsack Toddler Sleeping Bag ($30)

Older toddlers may really like sleep sacks — but also like walking. Sleep sacks with foot holes make that easier and safer for them, allowing their bare feet to hit the ground. And unlike blankets, which parents may introduce around 2 years old, these sleep sacks can't get kicked off and disturb sleep.

"I've been purchasing HALO sleep sacks for almost a year and a half," wrote one reviewer, who gave the sleep sack four stars. "I just stumbled across the pants version and love it. My only complaint is my little one doesn't always have footies on her PJs as she's gotten older and kicks her socks off, so her feet are cold. Easy to put on and take off."
