One of the most unique lighthouses still open to the public, a trip to visit the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is an adventure. Only 18 tours are available each Summer (for kids ages 12 and up), and they must be booked in advance. Visitors board a boat for a 30-minute ride across the Chesapeake Bay to the only screw-pile lighthouse still standing in its original site. They then climb up to the lighthouse to tour the hexagonal cottage and learn how the keepers live, how the National Historic Site is being maintained, and what its role has been over the years. For lighthouse enthusiasts, this is a one-of-a-kind visit!
