Caution For Croc-Wearing Kids

Plastic clogs have become a fast favorite of lil kids and their parents who love the convenience of the slip-on shoes, but wearers should take caution.

A New York Times health blog stated that escalator accidents involving the nonskid shoes getting caught in front of or on the sides of the moving steps were reported in Japan and across the nation. It said:

Closer to home, local television stations and bloggers also have reported on several escalator injuries to kids who were wearing Crocs. In August, the blog Wisebread ran pictures of a mangled Croc shoe and a little girl's bloodied toes, both allegedly the aftermath of an escalator accident. And one website, CrocsAccidents, is devoted entirely to injuries that occur while kids are wearing Crocs.

Do you think shoe style contributes to escalator safety, or is this just a crock?

Blame the parents, not the shoes. This kind of stuff only happens to children who aren't properly attended.

I think that I will still be supporting the crocs for kids. I think that any shoe could get stuck when it's that small.

Aaah, my shoes got stuck in the escalator when I was about two and a half. Bad experience.

My daughter loves her crocs and wears them all the time. Yes, the are squishier than some other kinds of shoes but so are flip flops. You don't see anyone screaming for kids to not wear flip-flops. Still, I love my daughter and want her to be safe so we take some precautions. At the mall and the airport (the only two places with escalators we ever go) we just don't use the escalator. We take the stairs at the mall and at the airport we take the elevator. It's a simple solution. Accidents happen all the time but we can't ban/outlaw/legislate everything. Use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. Take appropriate precautions for the situation.

My friends have Crocs and they're always falling out of them because the shoes are made VERY wide...

No. The appeal is that he likes them, they fit well, they're non-skid, and his feet do better in them than any other shoe.

I think they're ugly anyways, so.......yeah get rid of em! I'm assuming the appeal is that they're easy to put on a kid, no velcro or having to tie laces. Very lazy.

I've seen the same thing with sneakers. It doesn't make them more dangerous. Statistically, no one has been able to put together data that says Crocs are more dangerous than other shoes on escalators.

Hmmm, I would think that it would be all shoes BUT, a few weeks ago I saw a family report to the service desk at a department store I was in, and they told the desk that their son's crocs got stuck in the escalator. When I went down the escalator, the "up" escalator was out of order and two black crocs were stuck at the top of the stairs. I had never seen that before, so I think probably Crocs are more dangerous on escalators. Luckily, the kid just stepped out of them and didn't get hurt.

It can happen to all shoes. Kids drag their feet getting on and off elevators. I did the same thing when I was little until my Aunt told me about a little boy who lost his foot in an accident, in tennis shoes. From that day on I never dragged my feet.

it's worrying but i think any shoe can pose a hazard on an escalator. also, depends on who's wearing the shoes don't you think?!?!

There's no statistics that show it, kia. If anything, Crocs have less accidents. Yeah, I looked into this when the story originally came out months ago. *lol* My son has a couple pairs that he prefers to wear, and I wanted to be sure.

Are kids wearing crocs on escalators more of a risk than kids wearing other shoes on escalators? Escalators have always been dangerous for wee ones. And a whole lot of kids are wearing crocs. I just want to know if there is an increased risk to wearing them in this situation or if statistics are being manipulated in how they are presented.

yuckie!!! I think that these shoes are good for camping, gardening and stuff like that.. where your going to be in water or something ... thats the only use i use for mine ne ways!

They happen to shoes of all types, not just Crocs. I think it's really reaching to blame it on the Crocs themselves. Loose shoestrings and flipflops get caught in escalators all the time. The same rule should apply to all shoes, including Crocs - be sure your shoelaces and straps are secure.
