Do You Let Your Kids Taste the Batter?

Kids love licking the brownie batter from the bowl more than they like eating the cooked treats. Most moms and dads have fond memories of sneaking tastes of cookie dough and cake mix, but prevent their own tots from indulging because they are weary of the raw eggs and threat of salmonella. Salmonellosis is an illness that can cause diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps and headache.

Do you take precaution, or let your kids live and lick a lil?

My little mice do not sample anything containing raw egg, much to Mr. Mouse's chagrin (whose favorite activities include nibbling raw cookie dough -- blech). Yep, Nonny is only my nickname. My full name is actually A Mighty Worry Mouse.

I am the same lickety; my son is free to have the sugar, egg, butter, chocolate mix but once eggs are in there it's a no-go. I am sure he would never get sick but I don't want to risk it.

i set some aside BEFORE i add the eggs. it's funny, growing up the "fun" grandma let me like the spoon/bowl/whatever and the "not so fun" grandma said it wasn't safe. i just can't bring myself to take the risk, seems like we are always the family that falls into that teny-tiny percent where something goes wrong.

Oh yah. I used to be more reserved about it, but all our eggs are fresh from my backyard. So, I know where they came from, how old they are, and I'm more comfortable with the food safety of them. So, now it's all available. Now I can't wait until we get a couple steer to raise - then I'll start eating raw hamburger again! LOL. I LOVE raw hamburger (used to eat it constantly as a kid & teen), but wont anymore until I know exactly what my steer has eaten, where it's been processed (i.e. my home) and how it's been stored. YUMM!

I know I shouldn't, but I do. She loves it, and it keeps the batter away from Mommy and Daddy! :)

I know that it isn't good for children to eat raw batter, but even as a child I was able to lick the spoon, fork, and bowl with my siblings. I was also able to get a good taste by dipping my finger - I was little though! I do let my niece and nephews do the same and I even let them bake with me. They love it.

But Eggbeaters are pasteurized, foxie. My understanding is that they are safe. Or so I was told during pregnancy.

There are so many things to make kids sick, and everyone is honing in on all of them and trying to eliminate. Batter-licking is a necessary part of childhood!

We get local, organic eggs so we eat all the batter we can handle :) I like the batter better than the finished product. Yummm!

We generally use "fake" eggs (Eggbeaters), so we are free to eat batter! Although I'm generally not too worried (except when I was pregnant). I'm sure I'll let my son eat the batter when he's older. Yum.
