Do Your Kids Earn an Allowance?

My daughter loves slipping crisp bills into her purse. On a recent outing, we stopped for lunch and when the check came, she announced, "I'll pay! I'll pay! It's MY treat!" At four, her cash flow comes more from her dollar gifting Grandpa then from accomplishing chores. That's not to say that she doesn't pitch in a hand around the house, but at this stage in the game we aren't doling out an allowance or teaching her financial responsibility.

Do you give your kids one?

My boys are expected to do their chores no matter what, but I reward them for doing it so well with $1 allowance a week. They are 6 and 9 and we just started chores last year and allowance this year.

I haven't gotten there yet--my kids are 4 and 2--and I don't know that I will. I never had an allowance myself, but was given $ for specific activities if I needed it. This is a thorny issue.

Our children do not earn an allowance. We may reward them financially now and then for good deeds done and good report cards, but a regular allowance, no. And our oldest (16) does work for us sometimes as a babysitter and she gets paid for that.

My son is too young for an allowance right now, but we will most likely give him one when he gets older.

While my daughter is too young yet to get an allowance, I will definitely give her on fitting of her age & helpfulness around the house.

My babe is too young to even walk yet, but when she is older she will earn an allowance. I think the money will start around 8 or 9 but the "chores" will start before that. When she is old enough to tidy her own toys and make her bed I will have her do it, so she learns that you just do those things regularly. WHen she gets older she will have her official chore, I have been doing the dishes since age 7, I used to have to stand on a stool to reach the sink!
