Dry Drowning, Boy Dies an Hour After Swimming

Supervising your children while they swim is a given, but what about once they get out of the pool? A South Carolina boy died one hour after swimming. According to an NBC report, fourth grader, Johnny Jackson died of asphyxiation by drowning, also known as dry drowning after he walked home from his local pool with his mother, had a bath and retired to bed for a nap. Dry drowning, which amounts for about 10 to 15 percent of all drownings or near drownings, occurs after a person swallows fresh or salt water, meaning it can happen even after a tot has been in the tub. And, the child doesn't have to ingest large amounts of fluid so parents should look for warning signs — difficulty breathing, extreme fatigue and abnormal behavior.

I don't think the drowning is due to swallowing per se, but rather is the aspiration of a small amount of water into the lungs which triggers a spasm of a throat muscle. This throat spasm can close of the airway making it impossible to draw air into the lungs, hence the suffocation (which can then draw fluid from the body into the lungs - look up "dry drowning" on wikipedia for a more detailed description). Probably the best warning signs are if your child seems to be choking/excessive coughing - this would mean water hit the epiglottis at the back of the throat and thus might potentially trigger the rare muscle spasm that causes "dry drowning". Still, it's such a rare occurrence that I'm not sure it's worth getting too worried about something like this happening.

they say it's rare, but 10-15% of all drowning cases is quite a few.. i am not sure how many are recorded, but I am guessing this isn't just a random incident which is really disturbing.. if that many deal with this per year, why is attention just now being brought to it? what the heck is a parent supposed to do? this wasn't a 4 year old, a 4th grader is 10 years old... you can't supervise or measure the amount of water your 10 year old swallows, heck, I used to swim in our backyard pool and remember having contests to see who could swallow the most.. scary scary, and sad.. sad for the family, and that poor mothers, and disturbing for everyone else who has never heard of this despite how many cases there are..

It doesn't sound like there is any way to prevent it and the warning signs are not very helpful... what are parents supposed to do about this??? Sometimes I wonder why the media even tells us these things, as a mom it's terrifying! Now I don't even want to bring my son to the pool!

I had no idea this could happen. How tragic for the mother and child. This is going to add a new layer of security screening to my summer.
