Handmade Halloween: What Was Your Favorite Costume?

My favorite Halloween pastime wasn't trick-or-treating, it was the anticipation of wearing my finished costume. As children, my siblings and I would come up with what we wanted to be for Halloween and then my mom, grandma and mainly, my aunt who is an amazing seamstress, would concoct the costumes from scratch. No task was too daunting, when Gremlins became a blockbuster, my brother and I became Stripe and Gizmo with realistic paper-mache headpieces. But none compared to the one I wore as Cinderella in first grade. With a few hems, stitches and a hoopskirt made of bent wire hangers, my aunt took an old bridesmaid's dress and made me feel like the belle of the ball. What was your best costume?

My mom and relatives made all the costumes too. I didn't even know you could buy costumes until my late teens. Buying things for holidays STILL seems so weird for me and I'm 26. Costumes, easter baskets, etc. I don't know if I have a favorite, i remember the great dissapointment.. haha. When I was like 10, My aunt made me a little mermaid costume and it had a full bodied top, and shiny tail. It was really incredibly beautiful, but i was reallymad becasue I had wanted to wear seashells, like Ariel does, and a tail.... in 25 degree windy weather.. It was one of those harmless little kid things where you want to be EXACTLY like the character, but totally not feasable at that age/climate.

My mom made all my costumes. I think my favourite was a flapper in 3rd grade. I also really liked dressing up as a punk in 2nd grade. I was so excited because I got to have liberty spikes and spray them pink.

We also had a lot of home-made costumes! My favorite will always be my 4th grade costume. The school always had a parade that all of the parents would come to, and everyone would ooh and aah about the cute little kids. My mom asked me what I wanted to be that year and I told her a pancake. So we got a large box, cut it into 2 matching circles (front and back) and then on the front we drew a yellow square for butter, and then added some "syrup." I wore it like a sandwich sign. All of the teachers thought it was awesome but the kids didn't get it! I was too embarrassed to wear it out trick-or-treating, but a few years later I realize how cool it actually was!

One of my favorite halloween costumes my mom made me was a hot air balloon! Much like you heather, my mom made many of costumes! For this one, I helped papermache a giant balloon, which we attached to a hat and then she sewed a cover. We took a laundry basket and cut the bottom out, did a weave pattern with ribbon and attached fake sandbags. I wore the basket like suspenders and the hot air balloon on my head! It was a pretty great costume, adults kept offering me $100 for it while I was trick or treating! So fun and I wouldn't sell it I was too proud!

Celebrating Hallloween is pretty new in Germany. We do have 'Fasching' though, which is the less scary version ;) I dressed up as the little mermaid in kindergarten and I felt so pretty!
