French Fries Are a Vegetable?

Do You Consider a French Fry a Vegetable?

There are parents who have long considered French fries a vegetable in their young children's diets. But, on the most recent episode of Food Revolution, it was clear that Rhonda McCoy, director of food services at Huntington's schools also felt that the frozen and fried potatoes were comparable to nutrient filled veggies like spinach, broccoli, and carrots. But to her defense in terms of commerce (not nutrition), the USDA agrees. What is your opinion?

Ketchup is totally a vegetable! :p I voted for No, they are not a vegetable, they are a fat. That didn't stop me from eating them 5 times a week when I worked fast food though. But to be fair, they were FRESH potatoes, peeled and cut in the store. Better than the processed ones that come frozen and deep fried in beef fat or trans fat oil. :p That's how I rationalized it and my blood work came back perfect... In schools, fries should be considered a dessert, not a vegetable. Absolutely ridiculous. Teaching terrible habits to kids.

What on earth! I don't even really consider boiled potatoes a healthy vegetable, because of all the starch. Nothing fried should ever be considered that!

Well, Reagan wanted to classify ketchup as a vegetable...

Ha, of course potatoes are a vegetable, but they don't count as a vegetable serving because they're not that rich in nutrients. Especially if we're talking about french fries, c'mon!

Obviously potatoes are vegetables. But it's not about whether or not they are vegetable, french fries are not as healthy as broccoli or carrots are as a side dish.

I saw this episode and was completely appalled that French fries counted as a veggie in the school lunch, but the veggie noodle dish didn't because it wasn't all veggies. Come on people.

Fries come from potatoes, which are vegetables. But when they are turned into deep-fried, greasy, delicious french fries, they become a treat.

Well, look, a potato is as much a vegetable as a carrot. And all vegetables are mostly carbohydrates, and you can deep fry any of those in oil too. But instead of tying ourselves to blanket terms that mean one thing and only one thing, why not educate ourselves. There is *some* nutrition in a french fry, but not much - for one thing, the skin is usually removed. There's a lot of fat. There's a lot of insulin-affecting sugar. It's healthier to eat other vegetables with more vitamins, more minerals. To tell yourself it counts as one of five a day is preposterous, but five a day is a made up number anyway, chosen because it *felt* attainable, so was a good goal. We should all be eating way more vegetables - but not way more potatoes.
