I have to recommend Astrid English. Nice to look at, seems fun to play, and they really learn a look and feel about letters. My daughters 3 and 5 love it.

I'll tell you what kind of app you need - one to tell you to get the child off the stupid device and go outside and play - that is the kind of app you need. Whatever happened to reading for lesiure or sitting down to play with you child, instead of giving them electronics to play with?

I don't know if it's available in the andriod market, but if you have an ios device I very much recommend getting Toy Store Delivery Truck. It has helped kick start learning colors and numbers, plus it's fun to watch all of the images and animations. :)
