Happy Meal Calorie Count

Quiz: Fast Food Kiddie Nation

Parents working overtime often find themselves in the drive–through lane of fast food restaurants. After a long day in front of the computer and bath time on the horizon, chicken nuggets, french fries, and soda are tempting. America's waistband is expanding, and the wee ones aren't exempt. A new study conducted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest found that 93 percent of 1,474 possible choices at 13 fast food chains exceeded the amount of calories that the Institute of Medicine recommends children aged four through eight consume in a meal. Take my fast food test to see if you know your facts. You may be less than happy with the meal's results.

We cook dinner almost every night, and we go out MAYBE once every two weeks (per pay period, can't afford anything more!). Usually, the two girls and I share a chicken nugget meal - I get the soda for me - and I order them water or milk. If we are at Wendy's, I will order a baked potato for me!

these are not shocking stats to me...what is shocking is that some people still do not realize what food is.

It is sad that restaurants are passing these meals off to children. Our daughter gets to eat fast food once a week if that and we just really try and keep her active to avoid childhood obesity. It truly is an epidemic.

It is all about choices and guiding your children to make the right ones. When presented with a kids menu I guide them so they are eating a balanced meal. They also do not have to order from the kids menu, my 7 & 8 year old often share a healthier adult meal, with leftovers, or order a side dish. My kids do not eat fries so if the restaurant does not offer a substitution I tell them not to bother bringing them. They do not drink soda either so that helps make a meal healthier.
