Homemade Teethers

If your tot is gnawing on the coffee table, it might be time to toss his teether and make him something a lil more substantial. While some parents rub an over the counter numbing gel on their wee one's gums or rely on the water filled chewies, the latest issue of KIWI Magazine takes the natural approach.

KIWI suggests a list of safe soothers that include cold food, a frozen washcloth, Hyland's homeopathic teething gel or tablets, Homeopathic Chamomilla and a gentle gum massage." It also offers recipes for homemade remedies from Root Pops to Whole Wheat Baby Biscotti. To check out one for their First "Ice Cream"

. What worked for your child when he was teething?

First "Ice Cream"

First "Ice Cream"

  1. 4 oz. baby juice
  2. 4 oz. breast milk or formula

1. Bring juice to a boil in a shallow pan over high heat. Leave uncovered and decrease heat to medium-high so mixture reduces by approximately 1/3. Cool in stainless-steel bowl set on ice.

2. Once juice is cool, mix in breast milk or formula.

3. Freeze in home ice-cream machine following the manufacturer's instructions. If you don't have a home ice-cream machine, you can make this recipe "granita-style": freeze in shallow container and, as it freezes, break up ice crystals by fluffing with fork, approximately every 15 minutes.

Yields 6 oz. (About 4 servings)

I washcloth is easy and worked for us. For an older child frozen fruit or frozen mini pancakes worked well, too.

With my daughter we used cucumber sticks - which we discovered by accident as I was making salad one night. Anyway, after keeping the cucumber chilled in the fridge, we would chop it in half and then into 4 quarters (one cumber would net 8 long cucmber stiks) and we'd always remove the seeds. She would just sort of mash down on it with her gums and growing teeth, it was the only thing that seemed to help. And now we've got a six year old who LOVES veggies :)

I've done the breastmilk pops, so juice in them though. Just threw some pumped milk into the freezer, waited until it was slushy, and they ate it with a spoon.
