My husband found our sweet dog, Tucker, on the side of the road about eight years ago. He was only a few months old at the time, so this sweet little lab mutt quickly became extremely attached to David. I’m not sure if it is his young age, his gratitude for being rescued, or simply his sweet nature (or probably a combination of all of the above!), but Tucker is one of the most loyal dogs I’ve ever met.
When David and I started dating, Tucker warmed up to me pretty quickly. Even after we got married, though, Tucker was always sweet to me, but I think it was clear that he was David’s dog. He absolutely adored David and would drop anything (including playtime with me!) when David walked in the room.
Fast-forward a few years into our marriage, and David and I learned that we were pregnant with our first little boy. I was blessed to have a pretty easy pregnancy, but once I started growing a big belly and waddling around, Tucker’s behavior to me began to change. I noticed that he would follow me around from room to room, no matter which room David was in.
Keep reading to see what the dog did once he sensed the pregnancy.
When I was in the shower, Tucker would lie at the foot of the shower stall, waiting for me to finish. If David came home from work, Tucker would greet him and then head back to wherever I was in the house. If I left the house, David said he would sit by the front door, awaiting my return. He was constantly camped out near me! David and I realized that Tucker was exhibiting protective instincts toward me and my growing little pea pod. David’s loyal, sweet dog was protecting his dad by watching over me and the baby!
And now, in my second pregnancy a year later, Tucker is doing the same sweet thing. I have to be honest, some days I get frustrated with him under my feet all the time. For example, when I’m going down the stairs with my 25-pound 15-month-old in one arm, a load of laundry in the other, and my seven-month pregnant belly ahead of me (I know, I’m careful . . . but don’t tell my husband I do that!), the last thing I need is Tucker under my feet. But truthfully, he’s very aware and observant of the space I need, and he’s always patient with me, even as I start moving more and more slowly.
With that said, it’s so amazing to see how Tucker’s loyalty and love has developed and grown from David to me to our growing little beans to our son. Now, my little guy and Tucker are best friends — they roll around on the floor together, and Tucker watches him with the same attention and patience that he gives me and my growing belly. I can’t wait to see him with both boys once this second one is here in the Spring!
Do you have any sweet stories about your dogs or other pets and how they act while you’re pregnant? I’m sure Tucker isn’t the only sweetie out there. I’d love to hear your stories, so start sharing!
