The Joys of Being an Auntie

Lil Community: My Secret Guilty Pleasure...

Motherhood (and being an Auntie) can be a mind-boggler. Go2Girl shares her latest revelation about her role in The Mommy Club.

I absolutely love being an Auntie to two adorable lil ones who are twins. My gift giving has never gotten out of control, but I must admit, I do like (spoiling) buying them stuff - messy sweets that their parents usually say no to or those toys which would make any parents want to donate in a second. However, let the truth be known, I actually feel like a kid again when I get to buy fun toys and games for them that I deep down want for myself! There I said it, I want to be like Tom Hanks in Big all over again. Sigh, those days might be over for me, but playing the role of Auntie gives me a free pass to buying everything that my mom would have said, "put that back now!"

I LOVE birthdays and christmas, because its the only time of year that we buy things outside of craft/art supplies. My kiddos bday is dec 18th, and my niece jan 8th, so I'm already planning all the fun stuff to get them. Horses are my daughter's favorite, but shes really at a playacting stage, so I'm getting her that giant loving family dollhouse. It's gonna be great! I don't have rules with gifts except age appropriate. Luckily, no one i know feels anything but disgust for things like bratz or miley cyrus or any of the current fads anyway, so I never have to worry about that. I love giant stuffed animals, though I've never bought one. I saw a teddy just like that at Sams, and we joked about getting it for my kiddo since we have a really tiny house.

I have actually heard of the 'no stuffed animals' rule before. I don't think Anonymous would be going crazy if someone, who wasn't aware of the rule, was to give their kid a stuffed animal. Mostly, people will ask what kids want for their birthdays anyway. I have a big list, so that when someone asks me what my daughter would want, I can always tell them something.

if i knew someone preferred i not get their child something, i wouldn't. but to set rules like this is to assume people plan to give your child a gift, and is actually really annoying. the entitlement behind that would make me not want to give them anything.. it's the principle behind it. what the parents do with the gift is out of my hands, but to have to stick to rules set by preferences (not health related reasons) takes the "fun" out of giving a gift and make me wonder why i should even bother spending my $ on someone who obviously looks at it from a materialistic view only.

Oh yes. Having a little girl is like having a free pass to play with Barbies and color in princess/pony/princesses with ponies coloring books! YAY! Really, though, my secret guilty pleasure is the hilarious things that my daughter says. My most recent LOLs came from this: "Penguins are endangered because they bite. You have to stay away from the penguin patch. A penguin patch is a group of penguins."

For me it's even worse, I am the mom and I still buy stupid, annoying stuff because I would have wanted it for myself! She's still to little to play with Barbies, but I can't walk past the pink aisles. I wanted one of those castles so bad...she's definitely getting one for christmas!
