A Sneak Peek Into Laila Ali's Whimsical Nursery

Jun 9 2011 - 11:05am

Laila Ali has styled her daughter a beautiful respite from the chaos of daily life. The former boxer and Dancing With the Stars participant gave birth to her first daughter, Sydney J. Conway, two months ago, and we're getting a sneak peek into the lil one's cool and calm lair.

Before giving birth, Laila turned to the experts at LA's Little Crown Interiors [1] to create the perfect room for her tot. Naomi Alon and Gerri Panebianco quickly assessed the space for safety issues and went to work. The result? A "whimsical traditional" room filled with feminine pieces to make lil Sydney feel at home. Take a detailed look at the room and tell us how you think it stacks up to other celebrity nurseries [2] we've seen!

The "Hope" Crib, Changer and Toy Box

"First among the exceptional items that make up the nursery is the 'Hope' Crib. Made in a gorgeous shade of pink, this stunning, bench-crafted, US-made crib is the combined effort of Little Crown Interiors and Southern California based luxury furniture maker, Newport Cottages [3]. As proceeds from the sale of every “Hope” Crib go to Breast Cancer Research, the piece serves as a symbol of the courage and compassion for which Laila Ali is known, and hopes to share with baby Sydney."

Custom Crib Plaque

"Each 'Hope' crib comes with a custom plaque for the owners to inscribe a sentiment of their choosing. On Sydney's, the inscription reads, 'Unconditionally Loved and Eternally Blessed.'"

The "Hope" Changer

"To further promote this cause, Newport Cottages also created the adorable pink changing table and a custom toy box."

Custom Decals

"The walls in this nursery are quite high, so we wanted something large and statement-worthy. We designed the Dali Decals metallic silver wall decals [4] to look like traditional wood molding – we just mixed it up to get a more whimsical feel by using metallic vinyl."

Crib Bedding and Coordinating Textiles

"Once the mainstays of the design were in place, choosing the perfect textiles became our highest priority. We used the 'nursery designer' tool on CarouselDesigns [5] to create a great set of bedding. We wanted something whimsical and feminine, that also balanced the colorful choices we had made for the furniture. We think every nursery should include some blackout option for the windows, and the clean white set of curtain panels are a perfect fit."

Artwork by Art.com

"At our first design meeting with Laila, we asked her if she had any special family items she wanted included in the nursery. First, she produced a poster-sized photo of Muhammad Ali holding his infant daughter Laila. We took a digital version to the skilled team at Art.com [6] and they stretched the photo onto canvas – a very personal element, which hangs above the crib."

(Safety Note: hung properly by a professional, a stretched canvas piece is a great, lightweight, easy to secure option for above a crib.)

Glider and Ottoman by SPI Baby

"When choosing the glider, we wanted to be sure that we created not only a beautiful room, but one that is also full of meaning and promise. With Laila's help, we chose the Winward Wingback rocker [7] ($1580) and ottoman [8] ($260) by SPI Baby. The time spent in this chair, will be priceless to the family, and we loved the opportunity to work with another L.A.-based brand, which was created by two ultra-creative women."

Custom Chandelier and Medallion

"Finding the perfect chandelier for this project was one of our biggest challenges. We wanted a silver finish to tie together the wall decals and silver frames on the artwork and the chandelier just had to be sparkly and feminine. Silly Bear Lighting [9] has a huge amount of customizable options – their team put a custom silver finish on this chandelier to make it perfect. We also added a ceiling medallion to make the lighting that-much-more beautiful."

Wall Monogram, Rug, and Floor Lamp

"(We) created a line of custom wall monograms to give our clients an alternative to standard wall letters. For Laila, we created a chic, sophisticated monogram (the digital monogram was created by the design team of WeeMonograms [10]), and had it laser cut in wood. Then individual crystals were painstakingly applied to add an element of feminine-fabulous.

Pulling from the silver and white chandelier, as well as the grey and white fabric on the chair, we wanted a rug with a subtle pattern that would create balance in the room. We found the perfect option in this Dash & Albert [11] rug.

The importance of good lighting just can't be understated, and this nursery needed a floor lamp. We found the perfect option in the floor lamp by Pottery Barn Teen [12] ($199)."

"The gorgeous stretched-canvas picture of Muhammad and Laila Ali over the crib needed something beautiful to flank each side. These cute little mirrors [13] ($45) were perfect - lightweight, easy to secure, and absolutely adorable."
