Larry King Talks About Getting Thrown Out of His Son's Baseball Game with Conan O'Brien

Do You Parent More Like Larry King or Conan O'Brien?

When it comes to protecting children from harsh words or unfair treatment, many parents step up to the plate. Evidence of this can often be found on the little league or soccer field where a mom or dad feels their child has been cheated. While those games tend to have "officials" monitoring the fairness of the event, some folks feel it is their duty to inject themselves into the refereeing.

Such was the case with talk show host Larry King at one of his son's baseball games. The television icon watched from the stands as an oblivious umpire missed a play and called for a "do-over." Furious that his son didn't get the out, King and the official got into a shouting match that ended with the celebrity's ejection from the field. Watch the passionate pop tell the story to Conan O'Brien. What would you have done?

I must mention that my dad was acting as a coach and not as a dad, I stand by him on what he did and even though they reversed the call because my dad made them get the rule book out he was still thrown out. I was not embarrassed by his behavior I was 12 or something so I knew what was going on knew the Umps were full of BS, so I stand by what he did and so do the rest of the parents and players of our team. Otherwise my dad would stay out of the way, and let us learn that life sucks sometimes even if we weren't playing softball.

mhg and bellafranki...I understand what you are saying and I don't believe in fighting with an ump because usually they are volunteering their time also and doing the best job they can but are you telling me that if one of the other coaches or parents are verbally attacking your child and the ump because they don't believe that a call was made properly that you would just sit there and let them act that way? I realize that this is a little different situation then what the video shows but that is the reason I almost got kicked out because they were battering my son. No you can't always protect them from life's unfair situations but you can most definitely protect them from other adults and if that gets me kicked out then go right ahead.

I would have stayed out of it. That would be extremely embarrassing for the child involved. It's not the end of the world. I agree with mhg, things in life aren't always fair, and children have to learn that. We can't always be there to protect them from life's lessons. And like mhg also said -- it's a BALL GAME!

there is nothing worse at a child's baseball game or other sporting event than to see a parent act ridiculous and get ejected from what should be a fun competition. it is embarassing for the child and embarassing for the other parents. things happen that are not always fair. kids need to learn that. and mommy and daddy aren't always going to be able to fight the battles of life for their children. kids need to learn coping abilities and strategies (not to mention, perspective-it's a ball game for crying out loud) that will get them through life.

I tend to lean towards Conan's side. I do get mad at my son's game when something goes wrong but I would never fight enough to get kicked out. I am usually the only family member there to support my son so I would not do that to him. I make comments to the parents around me but never enough to get kicked out.

This happened at one of my softball games. The umpire made a ridiculous call, and that set my dad off who was coaching for that game, he too was ejected.
