A Map of What It Takes to Raise a Child

Raising a child requires the ability to balance many things. But when your child has special needs, documenting and explaining all the essential responsibilities you juggle to his or her primary healthcare specialists can be daunting! To get a handle on it, a mom named Cristin Lind drew the map that's pictured to the left, of her son Gabe's caretaking needs. (Click to enlarge it.)

The map helped her realize just how much she was juggling and won her more respect from her son's medical team. It also prompted her to recommend the exercise to all parents, whether of special needs kids or not: “Sometimes you can’t see your life until you step away and look," she says.
