Our Family Tradition: Sipping at Sunrise

Our Family Tradition: Sipping at Sunrise

Dating back to the time when our boys were babies and we were exhausted in the morning, we started setting an automatic coffeemaker at night. We would have it brew early, and then one of us would go downstairs in the early morning light to bring the pot and two mugs up on a tray, enabling us to enjoy some coffee in bed before starting the day.

When the boys were old enough to be off the bottle, we started bringing up sippy cups filled with whole milk as well, first for our oldest son and then for both of our boys. We would get the cups ready the night before with the coffee, and then they would come up on the breakfast tray along with our own morning mugs.

And so it was that our tradition of "coffee and milk" was born.

It's so ingrained that we now often wake to our youngest, standing (barely contained) by my husband's head at 6 a.m. "Daddy! Time to get the coffee and milk!" he exclaims in a stage whisper. Once these have been fetched (sometimes with a lot of pushing and pulling from the wee one) all four of us sit in our big bed together and have a chat while the boys drink their milk. It is a great morning favor for one boy to bring the other boy his cup of milk, or for Daddy to hand milks off the tray to both boys, who have nestled into the bed and covered up. Passing milks and coffees helpfully about is how we show each other consideration and kindness first thing in the morning.

It seems so normal to us that it's hard to imagine mornings any other way, although of course I know the boys will soon want to get on with their day instead of hanging around with boring, sleepy Mommy and Daddy! Still, it's a cuddly memory that we'll cherish when they are grown.
