Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Shakes During Delivery

Patrick Dempsey Gives Parenting Advice

When Did You Feel Like a Parent?

The second I saw a plus sign on my pregnancy test, I felt like a mother. I didn't feel the same way I do about my daughter now, but I was overwhelmed by a sense of heightened responsibility that took hold of me.

When discussing Made of Honor co–star Michelle Monaghan's pregnancy news, Patrick Dempsey said :

I told Michelle she may not see it now, but her life will change profoundly after she delivers the baby. I told her being a parent is a feeling that she will not understand until she actually has the child.

My world was rocked upside down when I delivered, but I already felt like a parent while expecting. When did you first feel like a parent?

The feeling gradually came. We went through a series of bonding moments and gradually, I felt more and more like a mom. It was a new feeling to me. It's a scary feeling knowing that this tiny little person is your entire world. One of my favorite quotes say, "Having children is like having your heart walk around outside your body."

I remember the exact moment, my daughter was three weeks old. I was pacing back and forth with my daughter on my shoulder. She was fussy and couldn't sleep and I was so, so tired and I think at one point I was sleepwalking with her. She started acting like she wanted a bottle again, so I fed her 2 ounces of her bottle and went to burp her and then I heard a splat. I looked behind me and there was formula all over the floor and on the back of me and in my hair. Then all of a sudden she burped really loud and then drifted off to sleep. So I sat down with her, formula still all over me and I didn't even care! That's when I really felt like a mom.

I read a study once that said that's the difference between men and women. Because the woman is physically carrying the child, her parental feelings usually kick in sometime during pregnancy. With men, it doesn't tend to hit home until they see the child and can hold him/ her in his arms.
