Postpartum Doctor's Visit

The Medical Recommendation Most New Moms Ignore

As a new mom, your life becomes all about the baby. When you shower, sleep, and eat depends on that little bundle of joy. But just because your child is the priority, doesn't mean you should sacrifice your health. Unfortunately, most women do. A recent study found only half of new moms attend the recommended postpartum doctor's appointment, which should occur four to six weeks after the birth. Of those with private insurance, only 51 percent with complications and 41.6 percent without went to the doctor in the recommended time frame. Dr. Wendy Bennett, the study's lead author, believes moms aren't checking in because the simply don't have the time.

"Women, after delivery, have a lot going on. They're overwhelmed, there's a new infant at home," she says. "We need to try to identify care opportunities that don't involve the whole process of taking time off work, trying to find child care, which can fall through at the last minute."
