Your Body at 14 Weeks Pregnant

Congratulations! You’re officially in your second trimester, what some refer to as the "golden time" of pregnancy. Here’s to you! Take a moment and celebrate yourself.


Your nausea could be gone by now, but some women, unfortunately, still may have a few more weeks ahead. Regardless, remember that water is your friend, and make sure that you remain well hydrated. Try to drink up to 10 glasses of liquid per day (80 oz. or 2250 ml). Good hydration helps transport nutrients to your body, and to your growing baby. Water also helps to flush out the toxins that can accumulate in your body. Carry a water bottle with you in order to make your 10 glasses.

Healthy Meals and Snacks

Now that your appetite is coming back and the baby is growing fast, it is even more important to eat well. Try to have three small meals along with snacks in between. Although you didn’t need to increase your calorie intake during the first trimester, you will need to increase your calorie intake by about 300 calories per day starting this week.



In addition to plenty of water and a healthy diet, your body needs exercise. Before you start, however, make sure that your health care provider has given you the ok to proceed. A good way to stay in shape and to manage your weight gain is to walk 20 to 30 minutes per day. Some moms swear by swimming or using the elliptical machine, which are both easy on your body and offer a good workout.  But don’t forget to do a 10-minute warm up and cool down period. Try to limit your workout to no more than 40 minutes at a time. Remember to keep your pulse to less than 140 beats per minute. Prenatal yoga is also a great way to stay strong and limber.


You might start noticing some discharge coming from your breast. Not to worry; the discharge is called colostrum. Right after your baby is born, he will get this fluid, which is full of vitamins and immune proteins, prior to breast milk. The milk will usually take a few more days to come in. 

Your Baby at 14 Weeks Pregnant

Your baby is now about the length of a large lemon and weighs about one and a half ounces. His thyroid gland is starting to function. A fine and downy hair called lanugo is starting to grow all over his body; the lanugo will remain until about 26 weeks when it will slowly start to go away. Your baby can now make facial expressions, and he’s constantly moving his hands. He has also started to suck his thumb.
