The Pregnancy Diet: We Always Want What We Can't Have

The Pregnancy Diet: We Always Want What We Can't Have

There's something about pregnancy that makes me constantly crave foods that I cannot eat, even those I seldom ate when I wasn't expecting. As tempting as alcohol may be to some mamas-to-be, my beverage of choice since becoming a mom is Starbucks iced green tea. It has a fair amount of caffeine so I'm not comfortable downing it while with child, but I do plan on drinking a Venti in the hospital bed once this bundle of joy arrives.

Then there's the listeria issue, I'm not a big cheese eater, but every salad that sounds appetizing lately contains crumbled bits of gorgonzola or feta which fall into the unpasteurized and off limits category. Are there certain foods you fiend while pregnant — did you abstain or indulge?

My doc said I could have fish sushi with really fresh fish (so I only eat it at one restaurant, but with a 2 year old I never get out anyway). I also eat pasteurized soft cheeses. I was craving alcohol like crazy, but I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and now I can barely eat anything. I REALLY know about cravings now. :)

I second Anonymous: U.S. cheese has to be made with pasteurized milk, so you're generally in the clear when it comes to listeria. As for what I've been craving, that would have to be sushi & cold deli sandwiches.

I crave coffee (weaned off of it prior to being pregnant because of migraines), BACON! (I now buy nitrate free brand but when I'm in a diner it kills me!), ham and cheese sandwich from my favorite deli, feta cheese omelette, a cold beer (although I didn't care for it before. Thank goodness I can't stand any sort of seafood.

with both of my pregnancies i have craved ham and cheese sandwiches, on white bread! to the point where i have to eat them, my doctor said to get the ham pre-packaged and it greatly reduces the risk of listeria. I also crave sushi...i have been dreaming about it this week, i can't believe i still have 5 months to go with out it! :(

I abstained from , but craved coffee, anything with caffeine, beer ,hot dogs on the barbeque and cold cuts/lunch meat. I craved and indulged in egg mcmuffins from Mc Donalds and my home made deli style potato salad.

During my pregnancy all I wanted was a good deli sandwich, cold. I dreamt of Spicy Pickle for all 9 months. Fortunately, I hate soft cheese, sushi, and most of the other no-no foods.

I've been craving eggs benedict for breakfast, and a deli sandwich for lunch. I know I can heat the meat before eating... but normally I get the craving at work or running errands so I have to go without.
