Pregnant women are barraged with ads for products that are designed to ease their pregnancy and make their babies smarter in utero. I can't tell you how many coupons and brochures I have received for nutritional snack bars and belly creams while expecting.

I had long read about the benefits of playing music for children before birth, but had limited it to the radio in my car and my iPod speaker system. It may be time to take it to a new level with the introduction of the Ritmo Prenatal, a set of headphones made expressly for pregnant bellies. With four speakers built into a soft harness, the Ritmo Prenatal has a cable that connects directly to your MP3 player allowing you and your baby to listen to the music of your choice. According to the photos on the site, the belt can be worn directly against the belly or over clothing and should be comfortable, as the company encourages wearing it while grocery shopping and walking the dog.

The Ritmo Prenatal will not be available until January, which is a bit too late for me, but tell me, would you be willing to shell out the approximately $100 the product will cost?

Not into it. Listen to soft music while reading or laying in bed. You don't have to wear a strap-on belly radio to get in some extra music time.

I think this is a great idea. I can listen to music at the same time as my baby without having to worry about the volume level being safe for baby. Plus if the speakers can be used in other ways after baby is born then the money is worth it!

How smart does your child have to be? I'd rather my child be normal and happy. This obsession with making your child smart while it's still in the womb is a little out of hand. Agree with the others, just turn up the speakers.

Who would wear this? Turn up the volume on the music in the car or the radio and save some $!

Neither, really. I'm not gaga over it but I don't think it's ridiculous either. But there's no need - listening to the music yourself, the baby hears it fine. There have been multiple studies showing that, and how when baby hears a familiar song, they'll dance. No need to project it directly into the belly.
