Student in Wheelchair Banned From School Field Trip

The class field trip is a day every child looks forward to, but for one boy, this big day ended in disappointment. Holden Crawley, a student at Stone Elementary School in Tennessee, was told he could not attend his class trip to the zoo because the school could not find a van to accommodate his wheelchair. The 9-year-old has been in a wheelchair for two years, after a car accident left him unable to walk or speak. This trip to the zoo was going to be Crawley's first outing since the accident.

After hearing about the school's decision, Crawley's grandmother Pam Flowers filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights. Flowers noted in her complaint, as well as several radio interviews, that the Americans with Disabilities Act requires schools to accommodate students with disabilities on school trips.

"I want him treated like you would your kid," she said in a radio interview.
