Things to Do For a Friend on Bed Rest

Mommy's Lil Helper: Bed Rest

One of my best friends is 24 weeks pregnant and on bed rest.

Since I went through 41 weeks of near blissful pregnancy, I can't imagine being laid up on my back for that long so I thought of things a friend could do to help a bedridden buddy.

To see my list,

  • Make sure she has a comfortable robe.
  • Purchase cozy socks and slippers.
  • Bring lotions and stretch mark creams.
  • Dress her in nice sleepwear.
  • Load her up with exciting books, magazines, DVDs.
  • If she doesn't have a laptop computer, see if you know someone who can lend her one so she can surf the net, email in bed, and get her dose of lilsugar.
  • Buy her a plentiful pregnancy journal so she can jot down her thoughts. Writing can be therapeutic and a good way to kill time.
  • For a pal who doesn't have a television in her bedroom, spoil her with a Slingbox.
  • Arrange for a beautician to come over and give her a manicure and pedicure.
  • Bring dinners, snacks, and flowers on occasion.
  • Offer to pick up groceries or do some laundry.

If you're not able to supply these yourself, get a group of friends to pitch in on a group effort. And if these are all a bit too much, a phone call or visit is always appreciated.

My friend was on bed rest for 3 months. There wasn't much I could do for her so I sent her an interesting site of the day, everyday, for 3 months.

Great list babysugar! Another thing to add to the list — offer to babysit and shuttle kids if the expectant mom has older children.

I was on bed rest for 8 long weeks! My daughter wanted to come too soon and I started having contractions every time I would do anything, like walk! Luckily the bed rest and medication kept her cooking until 36 weeks and she was just fine. Bring your friends books and be sure she is hooked up to wireless, it saved my life! I was able to do a lot of shopping on the internet for the nursery. I spent time researching and got A LOT of things with FREE shipping and no sales tax. There are great deals to be had if you have the time to search the internet for hours a day!

My mom was on bedrest when she was pregnant with me for nearly half of her pregnancy. I have an older sister. It can be done. Hard and challenging - but doable.

I was on bedrest for a week before I, sadly, miscarried. It was unbearable! I wanted to get up, I have a 1 year old, and it was impossible, she was upset that I wasn't doing things for her. I think it's just not possible when it's your second.

My friend is on bedrest because she has a shortened cervix. But that's only one of many reasons.

I would offer to clean her bathroom/kitchen/living room/bedroom - what ever she needed. Or even help to put together some of the baby gear and help get the nursery ready (if she is okay with that)

Just curious - why does one usually end up on bedrest?

I have a friend on bedrest who bought herself pajamas to commemorate all of the upcoming occasions she will miss out and about - St. Patty's Day, Easter, etc. She said they were cheap, but will put her in a good mood on those days!
