Tipping Camp Counselors

Mommy Dearest: Do I Need to Tip All of the Counselors

Mommy Dearest –

Camp season is drawing to a close this week and the topic of discussion at the bus stop this morning turned to tipping the counselors. It is my son's first year at camp and I hadn't realized that the counselors needed to be tipped. All of the parents agreed to a set amount per child (the camp, apparently, doesn't have any guidelines about this) but my son was closer with some counselors more than others. Would it be OK for me to just tip the ones he liked? Otherwise, we are looking at another $200 on top of what I paid for camp!

Dear Testing the Tipping Rules –

There is more than one reason parents often dread the end of the Summer – and it doesn't have to do with the kids being home with no activities before school starts. If your camp does not have any set guidelines about tipping, it really is up to you to decide who, if anyone, should be rewarded. That said, it is highly likely that the counselors will compare what they received and from whom they received it. If you have any intention of sending your son back to the camp next Summer, you are best off tipping all of his counselors – you never know who will be leading his group next year!

I have gone and worked and taken kids to camps most of my life. I have never heard of tipping. Yes, counselors don't make much, but I have never thought of tipping. Maybe a gift from the child after...or sometimes a parent would spring for a pizza party/cake for the cabin, but this is not something I have ever heard of.

I have never heard of tipping counselors. Is there anyone you DON'T have to tip nowadays?

I've never heard of tipping counsellors, either - if anything at all, a small gift seems more appropriate...but if tipping is what you want to do, go for it.

I know.. I was going to mention that its several grand usually for camp, per child, so i cant imagine the company doesn't make enough for their costs as well as profit.

I have never in my life heard of tipping counselors!! I went to day camps as a child (very, very nice ones) and my parents never tipped the counselors and I send my daughter to a very nice camp, both last year and this year, and I can tell you that after getting almost $4,000 from me for the camp itself....there is NO way I'm tipping the counselors....they are just doing their jobs....absolutely insane!

I'd never heard of tipping counselors... I guess everyone needs to be tipped these days.
