here's the real tip: don't use them if you can stand to have your children suffer just a little bit in the name of strengthening their immune systems. only ever use something if your doctor recommends it. yes, i have two children, and yes they've been sick. my son (18 months) just got over a really bad cold that had him coughing and running mucus out of his nose all day. the doc said there was no infection (ear or bronchial), so we decided to let it run its course. it took 10 days, but now his body has successfully fought something on its own, and he'll only benefit from that. i totally get it that sometimes a cold or virus completely knocks your kid out and disrupts sleep and eating and generally makes them miserable. by all means, if your child is in pain or clearly just needs relief, do what you must. but, if it's just a cold and there is no infection--let your kid's immune system do its job.
