To me, the best child photos each tell a miniature story. I like to capture kids in their element, playing, napping, and just being . . . well, kids. And though their faces are the heroes of the photo, showing a bit of their surroundings can really complete the story. A simple tip for dramatic effect: try placing your subjects off-center and composing your photo to have a large amount of empty space to one side of your subject. This empty space, or white space, can be the extension of their backdrop, whether it's grass, a brick wall, or just the sky. Whatever that white space is, just make sure it's uniform and simple without things like distracting people or objects in the background coming into view.
