Types of Birthday Cakes For Kids

What Kind of Cake Mom Are You?

Vanilla or chocolate? When it comes to wee one's birthday cakes, the possibilities are endless. Many mothers prefer to bake their own enlisting tiny, helping hands and spoon-licking tongues while other mommies prefer to pick up a bakery's special concoction that is sure to please the kids — big and small. When a tot requests an ice-cream dessert, mum may be pressed to call Ben and Jerry's or Baskin Robbins just for sake of ease. And then there's me — the mom that still adores good old sheet cake from the supermarket — confection sugar and all. When she leaves it in someone else's hands, mama just better pray they spell the name right!

Besides that I really don't like how store bought cakes taste.

My mom always made ours and they were awesome! She had different themes and designs for every year. I really hope to continue the tradition with my kids. I've already done some for my fiance and helping my mom with my siblings' :) It's fun!!

I do both. Sometimes I make them and sometimes I order them. Depends on what's going on in my life at the time.

bakery. i can't make a cake that looks the way i think a birthday cake should look. if we're having a big party (more than about 20) we get costco cakes. we LOVE their cakes!

I will definitely make all of my daughter's birthday cakes. It just doesn't feel right to me to do otherwise - you gotta put the love in there!! For her first birthday I made a healthy banana cake, but I can't wait until she's old enough to start requesting crazy rainbow cakes, or whatever she can think up!!!

We buy our cakes at our favorite bakery. If I had better cake decorating skills, I'd make them from scratch.

I'm not much of a baker/cook at all in our house, but when it comes to birthdays around here I'm all about making them myself! I usually try to do special little things with the cakes. One year my hubby got a chocolate cake with chocolate pudding inside and melted chocolate chips on top (so good!!). And for our son's 1st birthday I made a treasure chest cake! It may not have looked perfect, but it definitely looked like a treasure chest and it tasted AMAZING! I will probably continue to make all of our birthday cakes! I just love doing it! Plus, I think I'm too picky to just order one from a store! Hmm... now I want to go make a cake! Too bad it's no one's birthday!!

I make mine from scratch. I like to use organic ingredients, and then I know what I'm putting into them. BUT they are not beautiful, I still have to work on that, lol!

How timely, I just ordered my daughter's birthday cake today! ...from the supermarket. ;) Hey, I don't cook. She'd get something pretty sad if I had to make it. Funny thing is, I never expected a store-bought cake when I was a kid. But somehow I feel like that's what I should do for my daughter. As if she'd think less of me for giving her a cruddy home-made cake from me...

I like them all. For my daughter though I think we'll have to start using something else cause she doesn't like cake, so I just got a little sheet cake from the store knowing I would eat the leftovers. But I have gotten a baker to make a cake for my husband's birthday, and I like ice cream cakes, and my sister and I will make cakes from scratch together.

Man, I LOVE cake. Could eat it every day. :) Anyhow, I've only had one birthday for my son so far, but I bought a gorgeous two-tiered cake from a bakery for his party. It was lovely and delicious, much better than I could ever attempt. Until my son is old enough to care, I'll probably stick to the bakery cakes. It's one less thing to stress over and a much wiser option for us, I'm sure. If he is adamant about a homemade one down the road, I guess I can see what I can do. But I'll cross that bridge when it comes to it. I have some friends who insist that anything short of homemade means the birthday is less special, but I don't agree.
