Why Are Gay Families More Accepted than Single Moms?

Why Are Gay Families More Accepted than Single Moms?

Janet L., a member of the Circle of Moms Single Moms community" target="_blank">Circle of Moms Single Moms community, says she's tired of simplistic, judgmental views of single moms.

“I have had it with people treating me differently because I am a single mother,” she says. “Single moms do not get the respect we deserve!!!“

Her feelings are underscored by the results of a new survey from the Pew Research Center. The study shows that while Americans are increasingly comfortable with gay and lesbian couples raising children, views on single motherhood continue to be quite negative. According to NPR, "almost 70 percent believe that single women raising children on their own is bad for society."

One third of Americans say they are comfortable with a variety of non-traditional family situations including gay and lesbian couples with kids. Another third say they have mixed views on these families, and a third group says non-traditional families can have a negative impact on society, according to the Pew Study, as reported by MSNBC.

Rich Moran, senior editor for Pew, says in a NPR interview about the findings that what drives the stigma against single mothers is a deep seated belief "that children are better off being raised by two loving parents."

But single mom Katrina C., a member of the Circle of Moms Young Moms Aged 20-30 community, begs to differ. She says, "We don't get the respect we deserve. There’s no respect for the fact that we kiss the booboos, change diapers, clean throw up, do homework, get no sleep, and the list goes on and on. But the one thing that I have learned is that I know I do a good job, and I do the best that I can to be a good mommy, and my children love me for that. So, that is all that really matters and counts.“

The Bible states a family is a man, woman and children. The world is so far form were it should be our children don't have a chance. While some people can't make their marriage work single mom's for what ever reason need support! It's the mom that 9 out 10 times does the most for the child any way.

Had to get my 2 cents in - I am not a single mom - but I have immense respect for those who are. If I am exhaused, my husband picks up where I left off, but for a single mom what choice do you have but to work through it? Also, I have 2 boys 9 & 7, and I have noticed that their friends who are raised by single moms generally are better behaved. A single mom doesn't have the extra time to say something 4 or 5 times to her kid - he needs to listen the 1st time and usually does, becuse single moms just don't have the time to put up with any cr*p!

Personally I feel that anybody can raise kids no matter the sexual preference. So long as the children are raised in a loving enviroment thats all that matters. And as far as children being confused thats a load of crock.
