Will You Hand Out Something Other Than Candy Because It Causes Violence?

Will You Be Handing Out Candy This Halloween?

Kiddos who get a toothbrush for a "treat" may claim they were tricked instead. Folks who choose not to pass out candy may be patting themselves on the back after the recent report that youngsters who indulge in the sweet stuff as tots are more likely to land in the slammer as adults. As a child, I always avoided the houses that passed out apples, stickers, and toothbrushes but now as an adult I appreciate when my wee ones pull out something other than candy from their trick-or-treat bag. Halloween is approaching, and we want to know what you plan on passing out.

"If you have trick or treaters and you don't give out candy, you suck. Smiling I'm sorry, it's harsh, but its true. Like everyone said, it's one night." Don't be so mean! I won't be home! lol I'm going to a Halloween party, and even if I was home, I don't live in the best neighborhood. It's just not safe.

fjaril - great idea! We live in London and I hand out £1 coins. We only have about 10 kids that come by, and they're all a bit older. I do buy Halloween candy but it's usually eaten before the actual day. It's my first time to go trick-or-treating as a mom and am so excited!

I give out mini play-doh. I get kids running up to the house asking if I am the play-doh house. LOVE IT!

We usually do up Halloween with lots of candy but this year I will be moving that day so we are skipping Halloween this year. My son is 13 so he does not really care.

I wont be handing out candy because i will probably be at some sort of function or family party of some sort this year. Kairi is almost 2, and very interested in the costumes at the store so I think we will have some fun. I plan on a late and long nap, lots of fun halloween activities at home (pumpkin carving, seeds, candied apples.. etc) and then we will head out to whatever our main thing will be. Apples and other such things really just aren't good ideas anymore anyway for saftey reasons, and i think people who don't give out candy on HALLOWEEN, but give toothbrushes and the such are ridiculous. It's a fun holiday and theres nothing wrong with a little overindulgence a few times a year. It kind of drives me nuts when people get into tizzies over things like this, and i think that study is complete bull because there's really no way to narrow down criminals and say eating candy was the major turning point.. ugh. I like the mini packages of goldfish though, they're tasty and a good idea for the youngins since a lot of halloween themed candy can be choking hazards.

I live in an apartment, so no trick-or-treaters - although I wish I did because I've always loved handing out candy and it gives me an excuse to eat some, too!

Definitely giving out candy. Probably doing the usual assortment of major candy makes, and letting each kid pick one. What I'm not doing is decorating the yard. It's going to rain a lot this month, so it just isn't worth it.

Unfortunately kids don't trick or treat in my neighborhood. We had candy last year and not a single kid came by :( I'd definitely hand out candy though. Its one night of the year. I always went trick or treating when I was little, and it never gave me a huge sweet tooth.

I go all out decorating the yard and porch and giving out candy every year. But I won't this year. I'm not even buying a pumpkin. I don't want a bunch of flu-spreading rugrats at my door making me sick. I'll be 8 months pregnant by then and it's not worth the risk. It is shocking how many parents let sick kids go into public. So inconsiderate.

I give out candy and I also buy the little bags of goldfish crackers for any of the really little kids. (We have a lot of babies and toddlers in our neighborhood plus my own daughter is still too little for a lot of the usual Halloween treats so I'll swap out some of her candy for the fishies.)

If you have trick or treaters and you don't give out candy, you suck. :) I'm sorry, it's harsh, but its true. Like everyone said, it's one night. There was a family down the street from me that was giving out religious tracts that looked like a comic book.... only one in which the main character goes to hell for not believing. I was STUNNED and FURIOUS.

Maybe all the psychos that tamper with Halloween candy were the ones that overindulged when they were kids? lol

I forgot to answer the question, lol. Yes, I will be handing out some kind of candy!

To Anon # 3: I agree. It is ONE evening of eating candy. I'm pretty sure your child isn't going to end up in jail one day as a result of that. If you're feeding your kids candy constantly, then that is one thing. But I'm pretty sure that Halloween isn't going to ruin the rest of their lives. My daughter either very rarely or never eats candy, but like I's one night. She'll survive. And probably won't end up in jail.

Uh..we currently still live in a condo, we rarely get trick'ntreaters, only average 1 or 2 during Halloween night for the last 3 years. LOL. So yes, most of the candies I got will be going to MY stomach :D Since my hub will be working that night, I'll probably bring my kid somewhere by myself before handing out candies to one or two kids that may just be dropping by :p

I heard it isn't allowed in the apartments here in MA. Of course, with all the psychos that live up here, I wouldn't dare let my child go door to door ANYWHERE!
