I don't know why Rebecca Gruber suggests that The Little Engine that Could significantly pre-dates Thomas the Tank Engine. The Little Engine that Could was published in 1930 and the first Thomas book was published in 1945. I also find it odd that Dr. Seuss is so heavily represented on this list. Seuss is hardly the only children's author with possible subtext.
