Stargirl is a very good choice--I recommend it to grownups as well! Not so sure about some of the others...I have read Jane Eyre and to me the relationship in it was not exactly healthy. Mr. Rochester is pretty messed up. So many of these others seem to be about unrealistic situations and girls being forced to date people. That strikes me as a little creepy. Pride and Prejudice--definitely! In fact, add all of Jane Austen's work. And I know it's considered old fashioned today, but I would put Little Women on the list. Jo March is, even today, still a very realistic teenager and each of the sisters have something about them we can all identify with. Nothing offensive whatsoever, full of good lessons, and characters you will never forget who are also worth emulating. A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratford Porter is a really good one that I wish I had read when I was that age. The Anne books (Anne of Green Gables etc) are great as well. For a tough-as-nails heroine there is Where the Lilies Bloom. For a modern book that is inoffensive and well worth reading, try Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry. It is sold now as the sequel to The Giver but was not originally conceived as such and stands on its own perfectly well.
