Hilary Duff's Free-Spirited Home Is Filled With Surprises

By the looks of her recently updated Los Angeles home, Hilary Duff definitely knows a thing or two about mixing bold patterns with subtle pastel hues. The Younger actress opened her not-so-humble abode to Better Homes & Gardens, and honestly, we can't get enough of her fondness for bright, airy colors and eclectic prints.

And although her house is the epitome of pristine, Hilary told the magazine that her design choices are always made with her 5-year-old son, Luca, in mind. "This house is a sanctuary for me and Luca, so I always shop with him in mind," she said. "He's respectful of our belongings, but I want him to be able to roughhouse and do other kid things here." See? Even A-list celebrities have a practical side when it comes to life with kiddos.

When it came to making her vision a reality, Hilary enlisted help from Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl, interior designers at Studio Life.Style. Scroll through for an insider's look at Hilary's vibrant home.

When it came to designing a bedroom she truly felt at home in, Hilary upped the ante by incorporating a bold floral wallpaper. "I grew up with wallpaper. My mom was fanatical about it, so it makes me feel nostalgic," Hilary said.

We love how the actress puts a modern spin on a space using supereclectic pieces, like this Gothic chair and a credenza that screams 1950s chic.

The design team achieved this funky, elegant living room look by mixing velvet retro chairs with a timeless sofa. "It was a balancing act," Zwickl told Better Homes & Gardens. "The key was merging all the elements together and keeping scale in mind."

This mesmerizing "Butterfly Kaleidoscope" painting by Damien Hirst is the epitome of a conversation piece.

One of our favorite parts about Hilary's house is how near and dear she holds family heirlooms. "I see the things I'm acquiring along the way — the rugs, the art, and anything that Luca makes — as new collectibles," she said. "As a result, the house feels full of memories and also of opportunities — new, old, and yet-to-come."

The actress is a master at combining new and old styles, and no space illustrates that more clearly than her spacious dining room. Check out how her rustic table and rug balance out a modern light fixture. It's seriously perfect.

This unique runner isn't something you'd ever find in stores. Three different rugs were cut up and sewn together to get this superunique look.

There's no denying it: this kitchen mixes bold colors and patterns seamlessly. This graphic geometric design is offset with the perfect touch of blue.

We love how Hilary brought the black-and-white pattern from her kitchen into her outdoor space.

Although Hilary never really considered herself a girlie girl in the traditional sense, her front door tells a different story. "I've never seen myself as girlie, and I don't own much pink, even though I love it."
