How Sarah Jessica Parker Finally Stopped Fighting With Her Kids About What They’re Wearing

Sarah Jessica Parker may love clothes, but that doesn't make her immune to the anxiety-inducing task of getting her kids dressed and out the door every morning.

Although her son James Wilkie is a teenager, she is still fully involved in the morning routines of her 9-year-old twin girls, Marion and Tabitha.

"We try with the girls to actually solve a lot of those problems the night before so that there's not stress with the morning choices," she told POPSUGAR in an interview about her latest Gap Kids collection. "So they can sleep as long as they can, and so they can have a decent breakfast and some of those decisions are already made."

She's also learned to meet them where they are: "One daughter prefers that over the other. One doesn't care as much and is more comfortable with anything, and the other tends to be more specific and wants those things organized and planned out to make her more comfortable."

And although she recognizes that they are "all seemingly their own now" when it comes to personal style, she's certainly still said no to things.

"But it's not so much about fashion – it's more about like, 'We're going to the ballet, and I definitely think you should have a clean dress on," she told us. "But I've also kind of retreated a little bit from those arguments because it kind of doesn't matter. I would like my daughters to look nice, but I have to also remember that they are their own people now, so as long as they're not wearing a tube top or hot pants, it's OK. If they go to the ballet and there's something on their dress or they're more comfortable wearing leggings, I don't know that it actually matters."

What does matter? "It's much more so that they're polite and kind and respectful and look people in the eye and say hello. If they're decent people, that's more important. I just have to remember that when I think that winning about a dress is important."

And although she even admits to getting "swept up in the argument," her new collaboration with Gap Kids should help the rest of us resist that temptation a bit more. The new Fall lineup – her second installment with the retailer – is all about cozy layers that, true to her own philosophy, are hand-me-downs in the making.
