If you've always had an entrepreneurial itch you've been meaning to scratch, you're in luck. Tech mogul, business leader, and bestselling author Randi Zuckerberg is a host of the new show Quit Your Day Job on Oxygen. The series features millenial entrepreneurs looking to pitch their innovative ideas to angel financiers. After high-pressure debate, the investors reveal if the potential businesses will receive funding. The catch? The investors must unanimously agree in order for the start-ups to receive venture capital.
"What I love about Quit your Day Job is that it really shows the new face of entrepreneurship in the country," Zuckerberg says. "I think people have in their minds a stereotype of what an entrepreneur looks like, and I love that this show is completely changing that up." Below are seven expert career tips from the tycoon herself!
1. There's never a "perfect" time to go after your dreams.
"I think there's never a good time to be an entrepreneur, just like people tell you there's never a perfect time to have children. No matter when you do it, it's going to completely shake up everything in your life. So if you are sitting in your day job, and you're feeling unfulfilled, or you're feeling like your purpose in life is not being recognized, and there's something inside of you that's like, 'I've always wanted to open up my own restaurant,' or 'I have an idea for an app,' that's kind of burning in you? Then you know that you need to be an entrepreneur."
2. However, getting a little experience first isn't a bad idea.
"While it seems really sexy and exciting to start your own company or business right out of school (it seems like everyone's doing it!), there really is something to be said for getting a few years of bigger corporate experience. Of learning what it's really like to work with a team, to own a project, to have to manage exciting work and grunt work at the same time, and build up that expertise and credibility."
3. There are many tools at your disposal.
"What's wonderful today is that there are so many tools that make it so easy to be an entrepreneur. Really, you just need a WiFi connection and a cafe, and you can start a website or a business. [And] for example, if you want to set up a retail shop, that might feel really overwhelming to entrepreneurs because they think, 'Oh my God, I don't know how to set up a store!' or 'I don't know how to build my own website!' But it's really easy to start an Etsy store, and they manage everything for you. So all you have to do is create your product, or if you have a little more volume, there are sites like Shopify, which enable you to create a website for you to sell. So there are all of these things that might seem really overwhelming to you as an entrepreneur, but someone out there has already thought of a solution."
4. Don't be afraid to show who you are on social media.
"Being yourself is the best way to build a brand. Consumers are savvy. They know when you're being authentic and when they're being sold to. I think your best bet in this world of social media and where everything is under a microscopic scrutiny all the time is really just to be your authentic self and to let your personality shine through. Whether that's through shooting videos so people get to know you, or sharing more day-to-day images of your life on sites like Instagram. Letting people get to know you is 100 percent the best strategy for building your personal brand."
5. The "pick three" method is the best way to achieve work-life balance.
"I think the key is to aspire to have it all, to aspire to have balance, but be able to forgive yourself if you're not able to achieve that balance every single day. I have a mantra that I kind of developed maybe five or six years ago that I still repeat to myself on a daily basis. Every morning when I get up, I say, 'Work, sleep, family, friends, fitness — pick three.' So every single day, you get to pick three. It can be a different three every day. And then as long as it balances out in the long run, and that you picked all five at some point, you're in good shape."
6. A good leader is someone who stays true to his or her vision.
"I think a good leader is someone who stays true enough to their vision of the company that everyone else around them knows exactly what that vision is, but is also flexible enough that when they hit a roadblock in that vision, they won't just lay down and die. That they will find a way around it, or they will find a way to change."
7. Allow your personal and professional life to mix.
"The thing that I've learned is that you don't really have the luxury of having a personal and professional separate identity anymore, thanks to social media, thanks to Google searching, thanks to all of these tools that are out there. So instead of trying to spend a lot of effort to keep your personal and professional life separate, instead think about how you can be your best, three-dimensional, authentic self all the time. Because today you get one online identity, and that's what it is."
