The weekend after the presidential election on Nov. 8, esteemed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie appeared on BBC Newsnight [1] to speak on the surprising outcome and its global implications. In the discussion with the BBC's Emily Maitlis, Adichie was joined by R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr., the founder and editor-in-chief of The American Spectator, a conservative magazine. The conversation intensified when they discussed Donald Trump's endorsement by the Ku Klux Klan [2].

After Maitlis brought up the KKK, Tyrrell scoffed at the mention of the extremist group and argued that people — like Hillary Clinton, according to him — find ways to throw them into the conversation. "It's inappropriate to talk about the KKK in the same sentence as Donald Trump [3] or any Republican. They're utterly marginal," he said. "They wouldn't even exist if it weren't for every for years you trot them out."

At this point, Adichie said with a smile, "I find it really interesting. There seems to be a refusal to accept reality." She added, "The point is, the KKK exists, the KKK endorsed Donald Trump, the KKK stands for white supremacy, and that has to be acknowledged."

A few moments later, Tyrrell again argued that Trump hasn't been at all racist [4], and Adichie replied, "If you're a white man, you don't get to define what racism is. You don't get to sit there and say that he hasn't been racist when objectively he has. It's not about your opinion. Racism is an objective reality and Donald Trump has inhabited that reality."
