Watch This Man Explain What's So Messed Up About the Opiate Crisis in Under 30 Seconds

For the first time in history, the number of Americans who died from opiate overdoses surpassed the number of gun fatalities in 2015. As America grapples with one of the worst pharmaceutical crises in decades, the companies that manufacture and distribute the highly addictive painkillers are unquestionably at fault in these deaths for essentially handing out opiates to anyone who wants them.

In just 30 seconds, this video from a town hall with Bernie Sanders hosted by MSNBC's Chris Hayes on March 13 demonstrates the disturbing practices of pharmaceutical giants.

The West Virginia resident in the video explains to Hayes that pharmaceutical companies pump opiates into West Virginia, particularly in smaller towns. Kermit, WV, the town referred to by the audience member, is just one example.

"Absolutely, they knew. It was intentional. It was willful. It was wanton," he said. "You send 4,194,000 [pills] to a town with 400 people. What do you think these companies are thinking? It's all about money."

What's more troubling is that the numbers are actually much worse in Kermit, WV, than the audience member projects. According to the Charleston Gazette Mail, a West Virginia newspaper, multiple out-of-state drug distributors shipped more than 9 million opiate pills to the town's single pharmacy in two years.

Kermit, WV, has since sued the pharmaceutical companies for their predatory profiting scheme, but the small town's struggle is emblematic of a systemic problem facing rural America.

Pharmaceutical companies are preying on addiction and capitalizing on it. As the audience member explains in the video, "It's all about money. Making money, Chris, is fine. As the Bible says, it's the love of money that's the evil that drives these people."
