Bill Clinton appeared on The Daily Show this week and told Trevor Noah exactly why this election is so different than others. Noah also surprised Clinton with his favorite celebration prop: balloons [1].
Clinton said what makes this election so different is the shift and push toward poles. He explained how when he ran for president, "each political party had a 40 percent base and there were 20 percent that were genuinely up for grabs." That's not exactly the case today, however.
The former president said there are fewer independent voters today because "We're siloed in the TV shows we watch, the website we scan, everything. . . . We don't want to be around anybody that disagrees with us." His point is that America might seem more divided than ever, but since the country has progressed so much even from when he was president, the problem is not irredeemable. The rest of his interview is an eloquent reminder that he understands the public and the issues that are important to them. Noah's surprise balloon celebration is just icing on the cake.
We couldn't let former President @billclinton [2] leave without a balloon drop. https://t.co/MONqSeW1j4 [3] pic.twitter.com/fCNfcBEGGx [4]
