Over the weekend, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan posted a photo [5] of the Republican house interns to Instagram. It doesn't take a detective to understand why people were outraged by the photo: the room was overwhelmingly populated with white people. Ryan didn't seem to notice the lack of diversity, and the picture prompted backlash and criticism [6].
I think this sets a record for the most number of #CapitolHill interns in a single selfie. #SpeakerSelfie. [7]
In response to Speaker Ryan's selfie, Eddie Bernice Johnson, a congresswoman from Texas, tweeted [8] her own selfie of the Democratic interns. With just a glance, it's clear that the Democratic intern group is obviously more diverse. Other Democratic congressmen also posted pictures to demonstrate the disparity between intern classes, and Chairman of the House Democrats Xavier Becerra, even shared a photo [9] thanking his interns.
