Better luck next time. While hosting a St. Patrick's Day reception at the White House for Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who was visiting from Ireland, President Donald Trump seemingly tried to quote an Irish proverb — except it isn't Irish.

"As we stand together with our Irish friends, I'm reminded of that proverb and — this is a good one, this is one I like. I've heard it for many, many years, and I love it," said Trump. "'Always remember to forget the friends that proved untrue, but never forget to remember those that have stuck by you,'" he recited before adding, "We know that — politically speaking, a lot of us know that, we know it well. It's a great phrase." (To be fair, Trump didn't exactly say he was quoting an Irish proverb, but it was implied.)

As many social media users pointed out, the quote is not Irish but likely from a poem called "Remember to Forget" credited to a Nigerian man named Albashir Adam Alhassan.
